Position Purpose

The Unified Judicial System seeks to hire a Court Reporter or Computer Assisted Court Recorder, depending on the applicant's qualifications.

Job Responsibilities
  • Report, transcribe, and serve as the guardian of the verbatim stenographic record of official court proceedings.
  • Use computer assisted digital audio recording systems to record judicial proceedings in magistrate or circuit courts.
  • Set up portable and fixed equipment, test it before each hearing, and operate it during proceedings, including marking testimony and retrieving it for playback.
  • Maintain an inventory of recorded cases and cooperate with UJS IT to manage recordings and copy to other mediums.
  • Prepare transcripts of testimony when requested to provide administrative support for judges.
Minimum Qualifications Court Reporter
  • Graduation from an accredited or non-accredited court reporting school with a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification.
  • Ability to type 225 words per minute with 95% accuracy.
  • South Dakota Notary Public required to swear in witnesses in the courtroom.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation is required.
  • 5% salary increase after successful completion of CRR (Certified Real-time Reporter) certification.
  • Publications of fee schedule for transcript preparation and copying.
Computer Assisted Court Recorder
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Three years of experience in an office setting or an equivalent combination of related education and experience; experience in a court environment is preferred.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Court Reporter
  • Knowledge of courtroom procedures, standards, ethics, legal terminology and processes, producing courtroom transcripts, English language, and court reporter equipment.
  • Ability to shorthand at least 225 wpm with 95% accuracy, stay up-to-date on terminology, troubleshoot computer issues, maintain confidentiality, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively.
Computer Assisted Court Recorder
  • Knowledge of courtroom procedures, legal systems, word processing, computer programs including Microsoft Word, Schedule Plus, Excel, and general office procedures.
  • Skill in typing, operating word processing equipment, and using transcription equipment.
  • Ability to use analytical skills with equipment and computers, provide accurate work, work in confidential settings, prioritize assignments, understand and proofread technical/legal materials, troubleshoot equipment, maintain confidentiality, meet timelines, schedule proceedings, and communicate effectively.
