- Review and ensure compliance of SD DOC policies, clinical standards, nursing protocols, and clinical documentation.
- Monitor and facilitate progressive patient care through a team approach.
- Deliver patient education to include demonstrating and explaining self‑care techniques, anticipating possible complications of treatments, informing about desired and undesirable side effects of medication and treatments, and listening to offender concerns.
- Assist Health Services Administrator (HSA) and Clinical Compliance & Education Specialist (CCES) in maintaining clinical skills of licensed nursing staff and unlicensed assistive personnel while ensuring tasks performed are within scope of licensure.
- Identify and address potential problems, establish priorities and propose corrective actions.
- Promote and be accountable for safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observations and sensitive item/contraband control including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control.
- Responsible for payroll, scheduling, and Continuous Performance Communication (CPC) check‑ins and appraisals; accountable for completion of shift responsibilities for 8‑12 hours per day; point person for daily clinic operations and decisions; assign nursing staff, coordinate staff orientation, and rearrange and reorganize clinic routines as needed; assist in hiring, participate in promotional examinations and disciplinary recommendations.
- Recommend, implement, and monitor compliance with policies and procedures; function as an on‑call supervisor and arrange for coverage when appropriate and approve overtime.
- Maintain unit cleanliness while ensuring appropriate stock levels of medical supplies and equipment maintenance.
- Coordinate patient care with other departments/agencies/vendors.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the South Dakota Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
- Three (3) years of full‑time experience providing patient care as a Registered Nurse.
- A bachelor's degree in nursing may substitute for one year of the required experience.
- A master's degree or doctoral degree in nursing may substitute for two years of the required experience.
- Ability to effectively supervise staff.
- Ability to effectively treat offender patients.
- Maintain required licensure/credentials.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to read and comprehend the English language.
- Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to problem‑solve and think critically to effectively resolve issues.
- One year or more of nursing supervisory experience.
- Experience as a Registered Nurse in a correctional environment.
The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen and the candidate’s ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Individuals selected for the position may carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. Selected individuals must successfully complete a written and practical self‑defense exam, CPR to AHA guidelines, and a TB screening.
If OC spray is carried, the staff must complete direct (level
1) exposure training and pass a practical/hands‑on self‑defense exam, which includes lifting arms above head, kicking as high as own waist, stabilizing another person for a controlled takedown, striking with hands, palms, shins, and feet, withstanding impact, rotating body 90°, and getting down on one or both knees with multiple repetitions.
