Salary: $18.00 to $21.17 per hour, plus $5.00 night differential, $1.50 weekend differential and potential overtime.

Position Overview

Full‑time, day position (9.5‑hour shifts). Shift schedule can be Wednesday‑Saturday or Sunday‑Wednesday. The role may require work during weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and administer prescribed medications as permitted by regulation and/or state law.
  • Maintain ordering and restocking of medications and supplies.
  • Ensure safety and security of the clinical environment through observations and contraband control, including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control.
  • Operate clinical equipment as required by the assigned work unit.
  • Report any security or safety violations through the report‑writing process.
  • Document accurately and timely in the electronic health record.
  • Preserve confidentiality.
  • Adhere to infection‑control measures.
  • Attend assigned training programs, including Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self‑defense course.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a state‑approved Medication Aide program.
Required Competencies

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and techniques of patient care.
  • Corrections and medical policies and procedures.
  • Use of medical equipment and supplies.

Ability to:

  • Monitor patient behaviors, symptoms, and medication effects.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Prepare and maintain records, charts, and reports.
  • Perform tasks delegated by physicians or licensed nurses.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with patients and staff.
Conditions of Employment

The Department of Corrections requires a work environment free of illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful background investigation, urine drug screen, and the ability to perform essential duties.

Selected candidates may carry Oleoresin Capsicum (pepper spray) upon completing a written and practical self‑defense exam, a CPR exam, and a tuberculosis screening.

Note:

The position is exempt from the Civil Service Act and eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
