The position provides skilled nursing care for the incarcerated offender in various clinic settings and is a STRAIGHT WEEKEND NIGHT SHIFT position at the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

Responsibilities

Registered nurses are responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Document accurately and timely to provide comprehensive inmate medical records;
  • Transcribe reports at change of shifts;
  • Provide standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines;
  • Preserve confidentiality;
  • Provide physical care and treatments, administer medications, collaborate on treatment plans, employ infection control measures, provide crisis intervention, interview and triage offenders, and perform patient and staff instruction;
  • Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures;
  • Ensure ordering and restocking of medications and supplies;
  • May occasionally participate in restraining an offender primarily for medical reasons;
  • Observe and report the physical and emotional condition of offenders including treatment effectiveness during triage, sick call, and emergencies;
  • Perform physical and emotional assessments of offenders during triage, sick-call, and emergency situations, using basic nursing and assessment skills;
  • Promote safety and security of the clinical environment through observations and contraband control, including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control;
  • Operate a variety of clinical equipment available in the unit;
  • Inform supervisor of any violations of security or safety via report writing;
  • Attend training programs, including Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self-defense course;
  • This position may be required to work any shift, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications
  • Applicant must possess a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the South Dakota Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
Required Competencies
  • Ability to effectively treat patients daily in various settings;
  • Ability to follow patient confidentiality standards;
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations involving offenders and/or medical situations;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language;
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing;
  • Excellent discernment and decision-making skills;
  • Ability to follow instructions and pay attention to details;
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts on a full-time basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Correctional nursing experience;
  • Acute Care or Long Term nursing experience;
  • Charge Nurse and/or supervisory experience.
