Position: Registered Nurse III (Part Time)

Position Summary

This Part‑Time position with the Department of Health – Board of Nursing is responsible for managing the regulation of certified nurse aides (CNAs). The successful candidate will provide support and leadership to CNA applicants, registrants, employers, and the public during the training and registration processes, interpreting state and federal laws, regulations, and Board actions.

Major functions include evaluating and assisting training programs to meet standards for initial and ongoing approval, and helping applicants meet registration qualifications. The role offers an opportunity to work with a team of nurses and support staff to implement the policies of the South Dakota Board of Nursing for public protection.

Licenses and Certifications

South Dakota Registered Nurse license or privilege to practice in the state of South Dakota.

Ideal Candidate Will Have

A baccalaureate or graduate degree in nursing, experience in the didactic and clinical instruction of pre‑licensure nursing education programs or nurse aide training programs, and experience in a long‑term care nursing setting. A combination of education and experience that allows for the review, analysis, and evaluation of nursing issues relevant to nursing regulation.

Knowledge Of
  • The training and registration requirements for certified nurse aides.
  • Clinical nursing experience in delegation to unlicensed or registered personnel.
Skill To
  • Analyze large volumes of medical/nursing information, apply basic principles and research methods, and synthesize the information into logical responses to board members and external customers.
  • Understand state and federal laws and regulations related to nursing licensure, practice, education, and compliance.
  • Communicate effectively in writing, verbally, and as a presenter for groups.
  • Use computer software applications such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Organize and complete work independently, knowing when to seek consultation.
  • Lead a nursing training program survey and present oral and written reports with recommendations.
Ability To
  • Work in a team environment, providing leadership, direction, and guidance on nurse assistant education.
  • Lead projects related to nursing assistant training and develop and implement new processes using evidence‑informed decision‑making.
  • Represent the Board with external parties.
  • Prepare and present annual statistical and narrative reports of nursing assistant programs.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Work with support staff to implement regulations.
