Full‑time, 40‑hour weekly position providing skilled nursing care for inmates in a women’s correctional facility.
Responsibilities- Document patient information accurately and in a timely manner to maintain comprehensive medical records.
- Provide standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines.
- Transcribe reports at shift change.
- Preserve confidentiality of all patient information.
- Provide physical care, administer medications, collaborate on treatment plans, employ infection control measures, and provide referrals to appropriate clinical staff for new arrivals, crisis intervention, triage, and orientation.
- Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures.
- Order and restock medications and supplies.
- Participate in restraining an offender for medical reasons when required.
- Observe and report the physical and emotional condition of inmates, including the effectiveness of medications and treatments during sick calls and emergencies.
- Promote safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observation and contraband control, including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control.
- Operate a variety of clinical equipment as dictated by the assigned work unit.
- Report any security or safety violations through the written reporting process.
- Attend training programs as assigned, including successful completion of the Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self‑defense course.
- Work any shift, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Valid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license issued by the South Dakota Board of Nursing.
- Ability to effectively treat patients daily in a variety of settings.
- Ability to follow patient confidentiality standards.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations involving inmates and/or medical conditions.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficient reading and comprehension of the English language.
- Fluent verbal and written English communication.
- Strong discernment and decision‑making skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
- Capacity to work a variety of shifts on a full‑time basis.
- Intravenous certification.
- Long‑term and acute care experience.
- Prior LPN experience in a correctional environment.
- Successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen, and proven ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Disposition to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired, with successful completion of a written and practical self‑defense exam and CPR to AHA guidelines, including the practical/hands‑on portion.
- Ability to complete the practical self‑defense exam, which includes lifting arms above the head, executing controlled takedowns, delivering blows with arms and feet, enduring impact, rotating body 90°, and performing repeated kneeling and standing motions.
- TB screening required for all new employees upon hire.
