Position: SEWER COLLECTION MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

Sewer Collection Maintenance Technician

The City of Pierre seeks an enthusiastic individual to join our team in making Pierre one of the best places to live, work, and visit. Provides services in the water and wastewater departments by repairing and maintaining sanitary and storm sewer mains. A CCTV van including computer applications to video and inspect sanitary and storm sewer lines. You'll operate a Vactor truck to clean sewer lines, storm lines, lift stations and multiple structures located around the city.

Performs smoke testing, bypass pumping and flow monitoring.

Job Summary

This position performs technical duties in the maintenance and repair of the sanitary and storm sewer systems.

Major Duties
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains sewer, andstorm sewer mains; installs taps.
  • Collects bacteriological and pH samples.
  • Responds to emergency situations, includingafter-hours emergencies.
  • Operates backhoe, excavator, trencher, vactortruck, dump truck and other equipment.
  • Sets up and operates transit level, pipe laser,and online tools to set grades.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs ontools and equipment.
  • Assembles and repairs catch basins, storm leads,lateral tops, and manholes.
  • Installs traffic control devices at work sites.
  • Attend safety meetings and classes.
  • Locates underground utilities.
  • Attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Perform related duties.
Knowledge Required by the Position
  • Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of work safety principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of sanitary sewer and storm sewersystem maintenance principles.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance ofjob-related tools and equipment.
  • Skill in the collection and analysis of watersamples.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
Supervisory Controls

The Water Superintendent assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines

Guidelines include department policies and procedures. Theseguidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretationin application.

Complexity/Scope of Work
  • The work consists of related maintenance duties.

    Inclement weather and heavy traffic contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of the city's storm sewer and sanitary sewer systems. Successfulperformance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of systemoperations.

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, vendors, plumbers,contractors, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
Physical Demands/ Work Environment
  • The work is typically performed while intermittentlysitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequentlylifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipmentrequiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color,and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed outdoors,occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise,dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Workrequires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
Qualifications

A Class I Waste Water Collection certification from the State of SD Board of Operator Certification within 18 months of employment. Must have or be able to obtain a Class B CDL with Tanker Endorsement. Knowledge of the operation of waste water and storm water collection systems and maintenance of related equipment would be beneficial.

Category Public Works Status Open Salary $24.59 minimum plus comprehensive benefit package including 100% employer paid employee health, dental and life insurance along with a 6% employer match to the South Dakota Retirement System and 12 paid holidays.
