ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Manual labor, such as shoveling, raking asphalt, etc. is required. Skill in operating and maintaining equipment such as street sweeper,truck, roller, snow plow, skid steer, and front-end loader.

SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for operating street sweepers, snow plows, and other equipment to maintain citystreets.
- Operates a street sweeper to clean streetsand city parking lots.
- Loads trucks with sand or gravel andtransports to work sites and/or landfill with front-end loader; smooths jobsites with loader.
- Removes snow from streets and parking lots.
- Operates roller to seal city streets; fillswater trucks at fire hydrants.
- Provides routine maintenance of equipment by performing such duties as checking oil and fluid levels.
- Patches potholes with asphalt.
- Operates sanding truck and backhoe as necessary.
- Performs janitorial duties and light housekeeping as necessary.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of city, department, and safety policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques.
- Skill in operating and maintaining equipment such as street sweeper, backhoe, truck, roller, snow plow, bobcat, andfront-end loader.
- Skill in using various hand and power tools.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
The Street Superintendent or Heavy Equipment Operator/Crew Leader assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.
The work is reviewed for accuracy, compliance with instructions and established procedures, and thenature and propriety of the final results.
Guidelines include department and safety rules and regulations, work orders, and supervisory instructions.
These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
The work consists of street maintenanceduties.
Inclement weather and the needto work around traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.
The purpose of this position is to maintain city streets.
Successful performance helps ensure safe streets and enhances the public image of the city.
Contacts are typically withco-workers and the general public.
PURPOSEOF CONTACTS:Contacts are typically to exchange information and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, orwalking.
The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, and use tools or equipmentrequiring a high degree of dexterity.
The work is performedoutdoors.
The employee is exposed tonoise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals,and occasional inclement weather.
Thework requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to read, write and perform basicmathematical calculations.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basicprinciples relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similarposition for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. A CDL is required for this position.
