Job Description

Library Media Specialist (2026‑2027)

Position Summary

The library media specialist is responsible for preparing, organizing and providing library and multimedia services to students and faculty in the school.

Essential Functions
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current trends in library/media practice, information technology and literacy by:
    • Performing the primary job of information specialist to patrons that systemically provides access to resources both inside and outside of the school
    • Assist with the identification, location, and interpretation of information located in and outside of the library media center
    • Providing learning related to new technology, use, and production of a variety of media formats
    • Providing instruction in the use of library media center
  • Provide instructional consultation by:
    • Participating in building, district, department, and grade‑level curriculum development and assessment projects and activities
    • Providing professional development of new and emerging technology and use of technology while guiding the instructional use of technology in the classroom programs while maintaining knowledge of laws (including copyright laws), communication of new ideas and information, and policies.
    • Keeping patrons informed of new software and hardware and instruct patrons of the use of the technology tools
  • Provide information and technology skills by:
    • Assisting in the use of technology to access information and networks that enhance learning and access to resources inside and outside of the library
    • Developing and implementing a plan of action that ensures skills are taught in a logical sequence for students applicable to the station of the job performed in a (K‑12) position.
    • Providing assistance with the electronic retrieval of systems that assist with computer-generated bibliographies and electronic card catalogs or other applicable systems.
    • Providing instruction on the use of the library media center.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as ordering books and materials, processing items for usage, planning finances and accountability, organizing, directing, and other management duties.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of students and how the library program can address their needs.
  • Establish goals for the library media program appropriate to the setting and learning community served.
  • Design a coherent library program integrated with the overall school program within the budgetary guidelines.
  • Develop a plan to evaluate the effectiveness of the library media program.
  • Create an environment of respect and rapport.
  • Establish a culture of learning.
  • Establish and maintain library‑procedures, physical and virtual spaces, and supervise library paraprofessionals.
  • Manage student behavior.
  • Deliver services by:
    • Communicating with members of the learning community.
    • Using questioning and research techniques.
    • Engaging students in literature and learning information skills.
    • Using assessments in instruction (whole class, small group, and one‑on‑one) during the learning cycle.
    • Demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and responsibilities by:
    • Reflection on practice.
    • Maintaining accurate library records.
    • Communicating with school staff and community.
    • Participating in a professional learning community.
    • Growing and developing professionally.
    • Showing professionalism by supporting advocates for all students, maintaining ethical librarianship and principles of the Library Bill of Rights and American Library Association Code of Ethics and Arkansas Code of Ethics.

  • Perform other duties as directed by the Building Administrator.
  • Meet the physical demands necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.
Skills & Abilities

Education: Bachelor’s Degree (Required)

Master’s Degree: (Preferred). Field of Study:
Library Media.

Teaching License: Required

Experience: Previous experience as a library/media specialist (Preferred).

Work Environment

Library indoor setting in a school environment for most of the time, with exterior activities both in and outside of the district as applicable.
