Job Description

A K-8 music teacher instructs students from kindergarten through middle school, building foundational rhythm, vocal, and instrumental skills for young children while transitioning to modern band, ensemble, or music history concepts for older grades.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach steady beat, pitch, and basic notation to early elementary students (K-2).
  • Introduce instruments like recorders, ukuleles, or percussion in upper elementary grades (3-5).
  • Facilitate middle school (6-8) units focusing on creating, performing, responding, and connecting.
  • Manage multi-age classroom behaviors and scaffold annual learning goals.
Daily Duties
  • Teach Music Classes: Lead scheduled daily or weekly grade-level blocks covering rhythm, notation, singing, and instrument basics.
  • Manage the Classroom: Set clear behavior rules and transition groups safely between active play and listening.
  • Direct Ensembles: Run rehearsals for school choirs, bands, or seasonal holiday programs.
  • Maintain Equipment: Tune instruments, store sheet music, and keep track of classroom gear like xylophones and recorders.
  • Assess Learning: Grade participation, track skill growth, and write progress reports.
  • Communicate: Email parents, collaborate with grade-level peers, and meet school administrators
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree - A four‑year degree in music education, music performance, or a closely related field.
  • Teacher Preparation
    - Completion of an accredited educator program with supervised student teaching in a real music classroom.
  • State Certification
    - Passing scores on state pedagogical exams and music content‑knowledge tests to secure licensure
Skills Needed
  • Strong grasp of music theory, notation, and basic music history.
  • Basic ability to play and instruct on multiple instruments, such as piano, guitar, and percussion, plus vocal coaching.
  • Capability to lead groups like a school choir, band, or recorder ensemble
