Our client, a social prescribing platform, is seeking a Director of Engineering for a remote direct hire role.

The Opportunity

Seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the product engineering efforts during a critical phase of growth. Reporting directly to the CEO, you will partner closely with the Head of Product to evolve and maintain the core platform, which powers care navigation, community referrals, and member engagement across social prescribing ecosystem. You will also supervise contracted resources and agency partners to help scale the product for new geographies and partners.

This role is ideal for someone who loves to balance strategy and execution (50/50) — setting direction while staying close to the code. You will define engineering practices, enforce HIPAA-compliant data handling, and shape a secure, resilient architecture. You’ll also be instrumental in hiring and mentoring future engineering team members. Seeking a Senior Engineering Leader who thrives in early-stage environments and can bring engineering discipline, team leadership, and delivery excellence to product stack.

You’ll serve as the technical leader for the company and as a mentor and manager, guiding and overseeing the work of the Head of Product while introducing engineering best practices and systems that enable velocity. You’ll help define architecture, manage timelines, and ensure the platform remains reliable, secure, and scalable as we grow.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and manage all aspects of engineering, from technical strategy and architecture to hands-on implementation.
  • Supervise and mentor Head of Product, providing structure, accountability, and engineering rigor.
  • Own delivery timelines and drive execution across product and infrastructure initiatives.
  • Introduce and enforce coding standards, testing practices, sprint cadences, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy, security, and HIPAA requirements.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Operations, and Partnerships teams to align engineering with business priorities.
  • Actively contribute to the codebase on a near-daily basis — building features, fixing bugs, reducing technical debt, and setting engineering best practices by example.
  • The expectation is a 50/50 split between strategic and hands-on work.
  • Build early engineering systems that scale — including CI/CD, monitoring, and dev workflows.

What We're Looking For

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 2+ years in a technical leadership or management role
  • Proven ability to lead and scale engineering in a startup or early-stage environment
  • Strong preference for candidates with HIPAA compliance experience and deep familiarity with healthcare data privacy and security
  • Fluency in modern web technologies and architecture — especially Zoho, React, Python, AWS, and PostgreSQL
  • A strategic and hands-on approach: roughly 50% of your time will be spent coding
  • Strong instincts around project management, sprint planning, and technical execution
  • Passion for mission-driven work that centers community well-being, health equity, and creativity
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort collaborating cross-functionally

While the Director of Engineering reports directly to the CEO, you will be supported by a strong Head of Product and a network of experienced technical advisors. This advisory structure provides ongoing mentorship and collaboration opportunities to deepen your impact and support your growth.

This is a fully remote role with the expectation of working primarily within east coast U.S. business hours. We emphasize collaboration and transparency — key meetings are synchronous, but the day-to-day workflow allows for flexibility. You’ll need to be proactive with communication in a distributed environment and available for internal meetings regularly. Company leadership convenings twice annually in Atlanta, GA for one week.
