Job SummaryIndependent Contractor position. Remote telephone interpretation from a private, quiet workspace. Compensation $0.70–$0.85 per minute. Must be 18+ and US authorized to work. No employee benefits. Advanced and support available.
Position OverviewThe Pulaar Telephone Interpreter handles on-demand calls, interpreting between Pulaar and English across a range of industries:
Healthcare, Government, Insurance, Finance, Utilities, Travel & Hospitality, General Business, Law Enforcement, Court, and 911. Calls may be simple or complex, technical or non-technical.
- Respond to interpretation sessions promptly and conduct interpretation friendly and professionally.
- Render accurate concepts and meanings following established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
- Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation and polite expressions.
- Maintain a professional demeanor at all times and remain calm during stressful or emergency situations.
- Maintain punctuality and availability during scheduled work hours.
- Follow client instructions and protocol to ensure expectations of the Limited English-speaking Person (LEP) are met and avoid interaction with the LEP without client permission.
- Understand and use industry-specific terminology for Medical, Insurance, Finance, and Law, and demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
- Remain neutral, objective and detached during sensitive subjects such as end-of-life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations and matters of sexual orientation and gender expression.
- Handle highly emotional or stressful calls and stay on call for extended periods as required.
- Fluency in Pulaar and English, with cultural competency and ability to assess regional and accent differences.
- Excellent listening, retention and note-taking skills for high accuracy.
- Strong concentration, detachment from conversation, neutrality and objectivity.
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Preferred education or experience in teaching, language assessment, translation or interpretation.
- Adaptability to LLS technology enhancements.
- Minimum age 18 and must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Dedicated personal device for business use (desktop/laptop, tablet or smartphone).
- Operating systems:
Windows, macOS, Chrome
OS, iPadOS, Android. - High-speed internet: at least 5
Mbps download, 3
Mbps upload, ping ≤300ms, jitter ≤30ms. - Quiet workspace free of background noise or distraction.
- Operate keyboard and mouse while in a stationary position for the majority of the workday.
- Operate company-provided software and systems.
- Type or write with sufficient manual dexterity.
- Lift up to 26lbs. (May be exposed to moderate noise levels.)
