Overall Job Summary

The Manager in Training is responsible for learning the duties of the Store Manager position and developing the skills required for that role. Primary responsibilities include driving outstanding sales results through effective sales techniques, building the team, fostering customer loyalty through world‑class customer service, and leading the execution of company standards. The position also promotes a safe and productive work environment for all team members, customers, and vendors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Uphold and promote a safe and productive work environment by following and enforcing all Petsense by Tractor Supply policies and procedures.
  • Observe and learn the processes of hiring, staffing, training, development, succession planning, payroll management, scheduling, and performance reviews.
  • Support selling initiatives (TEAM):
    • Thank the customer
    • Engage with the customer and/or pet
    • Advise products or services
    • Make it memorable
  • Drive sales and profit through top‑line sales, merchandising initiatives, expense control, profit/loss management, and asset protection.
  • Grow the grooming business and ensure all pets are cared for and safe.
  • Generate brand awareness through local marketing events such as pet adoptions and community fairs.
  • Lead execution of Petsense standards covering store presentation, inventory management, freight movement, pricing/promotional activities, and loss prevention.
  • Perform daily duties including customer complaint resolution, opening/closing procedures, bank deposits, cash register operation, and cash handling supervision.
  • Work comfortably with small animals (snakes, spiders, crickets, hamsters, amphibians, etc.) while following all safety policies.
  • Reconcile cash drawers and vaults accurately on a daily basis.
  • Maintain regular attendance and be available for scheduled shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Complete paperwork such as invoices, schedules, product orders, returns, POs, sales forecasting, payroll analysis, budget reviews, and team evaluation documentation.
  • Manage inventory changes, budgeting, auditing, and live animal care policies.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years retail leadership experience.
  • Experience in profit/loss, scheduling, shrink control, payroll management, staffing, hiring, supervising, and counseling.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older with a valid driver’s license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; ability to read, write, and count accurately.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
  • Effective communication with customers and team members.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to resolve issues ethically.
  • Time and stress management.
  • Basic computer skills and math aptitude.
Working Conditions
  • Indoor work with moderate noise; floors are hard surfaces.
  • Shifts typically 4–8+ hours, varying by store.
  • Travel may be required for training, meetings, or assistance at other locations.
Physical Requirements
  • Non‑sedentary; ability to move around the store and outdoor areas quickly and safely.
  • Capacity to lift or move merchandise up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, lift, and use equipment such as dollies, hand trucks, and forklifts (if applicable).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to operate store equipment and the point‑of‑sale system.
  • Travel and driving as needed for business purposes.
