The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for ensuring exceptional turf management and maintaining excellent playing conditions across all golf courses, practice areas, and related facilities. This role involves managing course maintenance, overseeing the grounds team, implementing long‑term course strategies, and ensuring safe and efficient operations in alignment with club goals and budgetary guidelines.
- Oversee the maintenance of two golf courses, practice areas, and all grounds, ensuring they are in top playing condition, in line with the club’s turf management program.
- Lead all departmental staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and ensuring ongoing professional development. Foster a positive and effective team environment to meet departmental and club goals.
- Develop and manage the annual department budget, ensuring efficient use of resources, and taking corrective actions as needed to stay within financial targets.
- Oversee and manage course remodeling, layout changes, and special projects, working closely with the General Manager and other stakeholders.
- Ensure a safe working environment for staff, members, and guests by implementing comprehensive safety programs. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations for chemical, petroleum, and equipment use.
- Maintain clear communication with the General Manager, Director of Golf, Golf Professionals, committees, and external contractors. Address member inquiries and suggestions regarding course conditions or potential improvements.
- Supervise the maintenance and operation of course maintenance equipment, ensuring that resources are efficiently allocated and maintained.
- Oversee the care and maintenance of turf, plants, trees, and shrubs on the golf course. Manage irrigation, fertilization, and pest control programs to ensure optimal turf health.
- Continuously explore new techniques and technologies in turf management and course maintenance. Ensure ongoing staff education in areas like equipment safety, chemical handling, and agronomy.
- Promote sustainable practices by minimizing the use of chemicals and petroleum products, and ensuring proper disposal methods are followed.
- Determine when the course should be closed due to adverse weather conditions or other factors that could cause damage if play continues.
- Maintain positive relations with homeowners and members, addressing their concerns and keeping them informed about course conditions and maintenance activities.
- Perform any other duties as directed by the General Manager, including assisting with snow removal planning, and providing oversight during the absence of the Director of Agronomy.
- Oversee all personnel functions by developing, maintaining, and evaluating staff performance, ensuring the implementation of effective, efficient, and safe work procedures.
- Effectively manage equipment, materials, and resources to optimize course operations and maintenance.
- Develop and manage an effective department budget, ensuring alignment with operational needs and financial goals.
- Schedule and assign work to be performed, ensuring that all tasks are completed on time and to a high standard.
- Review and follow up on all work performed to ensure it meets quality standards, taking corrective action as needed.
- Ensure a safe working environment for employees, members, and guests by adhering to safety regulations and promoting a culture of safety and responsibility across all operations.
- In-depth knowledge of golf course management, including tools, techniques, materials, and processes used in golf course construction, landscaping, maintenance, and building upkeep.
- Pesticide Applicator Certification to apply pesticides in compliance with local regulations and industry standards for turf health and safety.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record to operate vehicles and equipment.
- Proficiency in operating trucks and various light motorized equipment used in course maintenance and improvement projects.
- Advanced knowledge of agronomy, turfgrass management, and environmental best practices to maintain optimal course conditions year‑round.
