The American Red Cross operates shelters for people displaced by disasters, providing safety, comfort, and essential resources. As a Shelter Service Associate, youll help ensure families have the support they need during one of the most challenging times of their lives.

What Volunteers Do

• Provide comfort, support, and guidance to people displaced by disasters
• Assist with shelter operations, including:
• Welcoming guests and registration
• Serving meals
• Managing dormitories and supplies
• Providing information and resources
• Adapt to dynamic, fast-changing environments as needs arise
• Complete virtual, self-paced training to prepare for the role

Requirements

• Age 18+
• Willingness and ability to volunteer in-person at disaster shelters before, during, or after an event
• Commitment to local disaster shifts (4–12 hours per shift) or extended deployments (14 days with 8–12 hour shifts)
• Patience, adaptability, and excellent customer service skills
• Background check and orientation completion required

Time Commitment

• Flexible scheduling with weekday and weekend shifts (day or evening)
• Typical shelter shifts last 12 hours
• Recurring opportunities based on availability
