Postdoctoral Associate
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate for Dr. Vikas Nanda's laboratory at the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine (CABM), located on the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) campus in Piscataway, New Jersey. The primary purpose of the Postdoctoral Associate is to conduct specialized research on a collaborative project on the origin, evolution and construction of proteins that transfer electrons (i.e., oxidoreductases).
It is expected that the Postdoctoral Associate will have expertise in several of the following areas including bioinformatics, bioinorganic chemistry, structural biology, microbial genomics, biogeochemistry, molecular evolution, and synthetic organic chemistry that will allow the design of interdisciplinary experiments to test origins of life questions. The Postdoctoral Associate will be expected to participate in the configuration and maintenance of instrumentation necessary for conduct of the project.
It is expected that research will lead to publications and the Postdoctoral Associate will be expected to prepare manuscripts as well as contribute to the preparation of grant and fellowship applications. The Postdoctoral Associate will also be expected to be highly collaborative and train and mentor undergraduates in scientific research projects. This is a grant-funded position contingent on the availability of funds to support it.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Conducts computer simulations of protein structure and computational protein design of small peptides and proteins.
- Synthesizes and characterizes peptide and protein designs.
- Structural and functional characterization of designs.
- Participates in scientific meetings within the NASA Astrobiology Institute and national and international scientific meetings.
- Coordinates multi-investigator and multi-institution collaborative interactions regarding the NASA project.
- Trains and mentors undergraduates in scientific research projects.
- Participates in the configuration and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and equipment, including computers, necessary for conduct of the project.
- Prepares scientific manuscripts for publication and contributes to the preparation of research grant and fellowship applications.

Salary Details - A minimum of $63,968 for calendar year appointments
Minimum Salary - 20,000
Mid Range Salary - 90,000
Maximum Salary - 200,000

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related scientific field is required. Ph.D. candidates in All-But-Degree (ABD) status will also be considered.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Candidates must have demonstrated expertise in at least two of the following areas: bioinorganic chemistry, structural biology, microbial genomics, biogeochemistry, bioinformatics, molecular evolution, and synthetic organic chemistry. The candidates are expected to be proficient in spoken and written English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with EPR and NMR spectroscopies strongly preferred. Previous mentoring experience is desirable.
