Position Title

English as a Second Language (ESL) Adjunct Instructor (TEMPORARY)

Los Medanos Community College is hiring part‑time ESL faculty for temporary assignments in Fall 2026 and/or Spring 2027. Faculty will teach day and evening classes at the Pittsburg campus, covering Entry, Bridge, Intermediate, and Advanced levels with a focus on pronunciation, speaking, listening, grammar, writing, reading, and vocabulary.

• Provide instruction in accordance with curriculum, course outlines, and class schedules.
• Create an environment that encourages learning, discussion, and critical thinking.
• Evaluate students’ progress and record grades on assignments.
• Meet with students outside of class when needed.
• Maintain professional conduct and adhere to institutional standards.
• Keep up‑to‑date knowledge in ESL subject matter.
• Fulfill professional responsibilities of a part‑time/temporary faculty member.
• Maintain accurate academic records.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• Master’s in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics, linguistics, or English with a TESL emphasis, or a qualified equivalent.
• Alternatively, Bachelor’s degree in TESL/TESOL/English with a TESL certificate (or comparable), combined with a Master’s in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or a foreign language.
• Equivalency may be granted upon submission of an Equivalency Petition.
• Understanding of second‑language acquisition, TESOL, ESL, and equity‑based teaching and assessment methodologies.

• Successful experience teaching various ESL skills at multiple proficiency levels, preferably in a community college setting.
• Experience supporting diverse, immigrant, refugee, and other under‑served populations.
• Proficiency using technology for in‑class and online instruction.
• Knowledge of diverse cultures and languages.

Adjunct instructor classroom faculty pay rate is $ per hour (up to $).
