Job DescriptionThis position is located at our Education Center for Autism on the Crawford County Mental Health campus. The role of the Specialized Self‑Contained Classroom Para educator is to assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of students with significant disabilities in an intensive self‑contained classroom within SEK Interlocal’s shared program. Responsibilities include implementing health, safety, social/emotional, and academic plans; providing behavioral interventions;
and communicating with school personnel under the direct supervision of a certified special education teacher.
The position also supports students with severe social, emotional, and behavioral disabilities in the specialized day school setting, assisting in the implementation of Individual Education Plans, monitoring behavior, collecting and reporting data, and providing behavioral interventions.
Essential Functions- Assist students daily with medical and nursing procedures such as tube feeding, tracheotomy suctioning, toileting, brief changing, seizure protocol, and personal care needs.
- Implement daily behavioral plans designed by the IEP team to meet special education needs.
- Support students with challenging or aggressive behaviors and maintain composure in stressful situations.
- Deliver educational and behavioral programming under certified staff supervision to develop new skills.
- Instruct students in individual and group settings across academic subjects, social skills, and daily living skills to meet IEP goals.
- Assist students throughout the school day in various environments (classroom, playground, hallways, bus loading zones, fire drills, assemblies, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.).
- Adapt and provide classroom accommodations under teacher direction to promote participation.
- Provide assistance outside the classroom (packing backpacks, note-taking, relationship building, field trips, social activities).
- Participate in training opportunities (CPR, education strategies, specific disability education).
- Collaborate with staff to share progress information as outlined in the Individual Education Plan.
- Maintain instructional materials and data sheets to track student progress.
- Create and maintain a positive learning environment and respond to individual student needs.
- Work cooperatively and demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with paras, professionals, community agencies, and other groups.
- Safeguard confidential information and observe confidentiality requirements.
- Apply behavior‑management techniques to maintain a positive learning climate.
- Adhere to attendance requirements and assist students during meal times.
- Observe all district and interlocal policies during activities.
- Restrict cell‑phone usage to break and lunch times.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the educational team.
Education/
Qualifications:
High‑school diploma or equivalent. Applicants must complete 48 college hours or achieve a qualifying score on the Master Teacher Online Exam within the first 90 days and earn 20 hours of in‑service training per year.
Clearances (required upon offer or acceptance): Criminal background check;
Health and inoculation certificate on file in Central Office.
FLSA Status: Non‑exempt.
Wages: Based on hourly rate, days worked, and completion of required trainings (9‑month school calendar).
Additional Trainings: Specialized training such as CPI, CPR, and behavior management will be provided upon employment as needed.
Physical Requirements /Environmental ConditionsThe role involves walking, sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and fine finger dexterity. Travel may be required, with work both indoors and outdoors year‑round in noisy, stressful, and crowded environments.
Benefits & DetailsPosition Type: Full‑time.
Salary: $15.50 to $15.90 per hour.
