Job DescriptionPurpose: The Specialized Self-Contained Classroom Para educator assists in the supervision, care and instruction of students with significant disabilities in an intensive self-contained classroom, implementing health, safety, social/emotional, and academic plans, providing behavioral interventions, and supporting certified special education teachers.
Responsible to: Special Education Teacher;
District Administration; SEK 637 Administration.
Experience: Job related experience desired.
Education/
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. Applicants must attain 48 college hours or a qualifying score on Master Teacher Online Exam within 90 days and complete 20 hours of in-service training per year.
Clearances:
- Criminal Background check
- Health and Immunization Certificate on file in Central Office
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Wages: $14.50 to $14.90 per hour, based on hours worked and required trainings.
Additional Trainings: On offer of employment, specialized training such as CPI, CPR, behavior management, and student‑needs based trainings.
Essential Functions- Assists students daily with medical and/or nursing procedures and personal care.
- Implements behavioral plans daily as designed by the IEP team.
- Assists students with challenging or aggressive behaviors and maintains composure in stressful situations.
- Implements educational and behavioral programming under certified staff supervision.
- Instructs students in individual and group settings toward IEP goals.
- Supports students throughout their school day in various settings to ensure a safe learning environment.
- Adapts and provides accommodations of classroom activities, assignments, and materials.
- Provides assistance with classroom logistics, field trips, and social skills development.
- Participates in training opportunities for care of medically fragile students.
- Collaborates with staff to provide progress support per the Individual Education Plan.
- Maintains instructional materials and data sheets.
- Creates a positive learning environment and responds to individual student needs.
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal relationships with paras, professionals, and community agencies.
- Safeguards confidential information and observes confidentiality requirements.
- Uses appropriate behavior management techniques.
- Maintains faithful daily attendance and works meal times.
- Adheres to district and interlocal policies.
- Restricts cell phone usage to breaks and lunch times.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to support the educational team.
Minimum Qualifications
Skills: Adhere to safety practices, operate office equipment, prepare accurate records, use crisis intervention techniques.
Knowledge: Basic math, read/follow instructions, understand complex procedures; instructional procedures, age‑appropriate activities, safety practices, conflict resolution, child development stages, blood‑borne pathogen safety, crisis de‑escalation.
Ability: Schedule activities, collect data, operate equipment, work flexibly with others, problem‑solve, communicate with diverse groups, maintain confidentiality, prioritize tasks, work as a team, handle interruptions, accept constructive criticism.
