Job Title: Transportation Director
Location: Pittsburg, KS

Reports To: Chief Operations Officer
Salary Range: $80,000 - $100,000 annually

Position Overview

The Transportation Director for local trucking company is responsible for overseeing all aspects of transportation logistics, including hiring and managing Class A CDL truck drivers with Hazmat endorsements, coordinating with external trucking companies, and ensuring the efficient and safe distribution of products to distribution centers across the United States. The role includes maintaining oversight of trailer and container locations, managing the fleet of trucks and vehicles, and ensuring compliance with Class A certifications and ongoing training requirements for all drivers.

This position is based on-site in Pittsburg, KS, and plays a key role in the logistics and safety of company operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Driver Recruitment & Management:
    • Lead the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of qualified Class A CDL drivers with Hazmat endorsements.
    • Partner with Human Resources to ensure compliance with DOT regulations and company hiring standards.
    • Maintain an engaged and effective driver workforce by providing leadership, support, and ongoing development opportunities.
  • Fleet & Equipment Management:
    • Oversee the tracking and allocation of all company trailers, containers, and fleet vehicles.
    • Ensure routine maintenance and timely repairs on all fleet equipment to maintain a high safety standard.
    • Coordinate with internal departments and external partners to ensure the effective deployment and management of transportation resources.
  • Logistics Coordination:
    • Plan and coordinate the movement of products from production facilities to distribution centers across the country.
    • Build and maintain relationships with third-party trucking companies to manage overflow transportation needs.
    • Work closely with distribution centers to meet shipping schedules and manage transportation costs effectively.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Training:
    • Maintain all necessary Class A CDL certifications and Hazmat qualifications for the driver team.
    • Develop and implement ongoing training programs to ensure driver compliance with federal and state safety standards, including DOT and FMCSA regulations.

    • Monitor and enforce adherence to company safety policies, with a focus on minimizing incidents and ensuring the safe transport of hazardous materials.
    • Review and analyze transportation incident reports and implement corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field (preferred) or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation management, with a focus on hazardous materials and/or logistics within a distribution environment.
  • Proven experience in managing a team of CDL drivers, including hiring, performance management, and training.
  • Strong knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and Hazmat transportation regulations.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with third-party logistics providers and internal stakeholders.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in various environments, including office settings and distribution center/warehouse environments.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements necessary to conduct site visits and interact with fleet vehicles and trailers as needed.
