Position Summary:

The Coordinator for Commuter Affairs and Upper class Communities is a full-time, 12-month professional staff position that provides direct programmatic, operational, and logistical support across all functional areas under the Senior Director of Commuter Life and Upper class Programming.

This position is designed to function as the operational backbone of the office, ensuring that commuter student programs, the Commuter Assistant program, upper class community engagement, community and neighborhood relations efforts, and assessment activities are sustained and executed with consistency.

The Coordinator serves as a frontline point of contact for commuter and off-campus students, maintains active collaboration with campus partners, and supports the Senior Director's ability to fulfill strategic, institutional, and external-facing responsibilities.

The role will live on campus and serve in the SHRL resident director on-call rotation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Commuter Affairs Programs, Services, and Off-Campus Student Support:
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and assessment of programs, services, and resources for commuter and off-campus students, including undergraduate and graduate populations.
  • Manages day-to-day operations of the Commuter Center, including space oversight, resource availability, and responsive student assistance.
  • Coordinates the annual update and distribution of the Off-Campus Guide and all related commuter resources.
  • Supports the Commuter Council as a staff resource, assisting the Senior Director in administering the student-led governing body.
  • Promotes responsible off-campus living practices, including awareness of City of Pittsburgh ordinances governing noise, occupancy, parking, and trash removal.
  • Assists in monitoring and responding to emerging issues affecting commuter and off-campus student welfare, including renter's rights, housing instability, and fire safety.
  • Assists the Senior Director in following up with students regarding off-campus behavior concerns, in coordination with the Office of Student Conduct.
  • Provides ongoing proactive and responsive communication to commuter and off-campus students via email, campus platforms, and the office email account.
Commuter Assistant Program and Student Outreach:
  • Assists in the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of Commuter Assistant (CA) student staff in support of the Senior Director's oversight of the program.
  • Assist in assigning incoming students to Commuter Assistant groups.
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of Commuter Assistant Training and Commuter Pre-Orientation, ensuring alignment with departmental goals and student onboarding timelines.
Upper class Community Programming and Engagement:
  • Assists in developing and implementing programming models and engagement strategies for upper-class students living in University-affiliated communities and off-campus.
  • Coordinates events, programs, and initiatives designed to foster belonging, academic connection, and social engagement among upper class students who have transitioned out of traditional residence halls.
  • Supports the Senior Director in maintaining collaboration with the Director of Residence Life and staff to ensure continuity of programming and student support across on-campus and off-campus populations.
  • Serves as operational support for the office's upper class community engagement calendar and logistics.
Community and Neighborhood Relations Support:
  • Assists in preparation and logistics for participation in city municipal meetings, neighborhood forums, and civic events where the Senior Director represents the University.
