Construction Estimator (Commercial Projects)

We are seeking an experienced Estimator to prepare accurate, competitive cost estimates for commercial construction projects. The Estimator will analyze drawings and specifications, perform quantity takeoffs, solicit and evaluate subcontractor and vendor pricing, and develop complete cost breakdowns and bid packages. The role supports bidding strategy and risk management to help win profitable work while ensuring estimates are timely, well-documented, and aligned with project requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for commercial construction projects using drawings, specifications, and site visits as required.
  • Solicit, evaluate, and incorporate subcontractor and vendor proposals into comprehensive estimates; follow up to clarify scope and pricing.
  • Use estimating software and MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) to develop, document, and present estimates, bid packages, and executive summaries.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, architects, procurement, and field staff to clarify scope, assumptions, and schedule impacts.
  • Maintain and update unit cost databases, historical cost records, and assemblies; apply appropriate contingencies and markups.
  • Identify and quantify project risks and propose mitigation measures; prepare alternates and value-engineering options when requested.
  • Support pre-bid meetings, respond to bidder inquiries during the bid period, and assist with post-bid analyses and negotiations.
  • Ensure estimates meet company standards and deadlines, maintain version control and audit-ready documentation.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating templates, processes, and data accuracy.
  • Perform occasional site visits to verify quantities, access conditions, and scope nuances.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of commercial construction estimating experience with a proven track record producing accurate takeoffs and detailed estimates.
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, labor productivity, and subcontractor market dynamics.
  • Excellent numerical ability, attention to detail, and capacity to deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents; familiarity with building codes and construction terminology.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams and with external partners.
  • Valid drivers license and availability for site visits as required.
