Department Chair Position
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh
About the Opportunity:
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) invites applications for the position of Department Chair and Professor. We are looking for a scholar with strong leadership skills, a clear and forward-looking vision for CEE, and the ability to foster multidisciplinary collaborations. The successful candidate must be qualified for appointment as a tenured full professor in the Swanson School of Engineering (SSoE) and have a distinguished record of sponsored research, impactful publications, and excellence in teaching and mentoring at all levels.
The incumbent is responsible for setting the goals for and managing all education, both Undergraduate and Graduate, research, service, professional development, and administration-related activities of the department. The SSoE is especially looking for a leader who can leverage synergies across Pitt, other universities, and industry and build strong partnerships, including major centers, initiatives, and industrial collaborations.
Pitt's engineering program, among the oldest in the nation, will celebrate its 180th anniversary in 2026. The SSoE boasts 230 faculty, 2,721 undergraduate students, 771 graduate students, $63.5M in research expenditures in FY2025, and 109 patents awarded in FY2025 (38% of all University patents). Established in 1868, the department maintains strong undergraduate and graduate programs, including a focused MS program in Construction Management, and world-class research in sustainable and resilient infrastructure, environmental biotechnology and engineering, transportation engineering, computational mechanics, and smart materials and structures.
The CEE department is the home for 23 faculty members, 8 staff members, 238 undergraduate students (sophomore, junior, and senior), and 83 graduate students (PhD and MS). The interdisciplinary nature of research is underscored by active collaborations with faculty from all other SSoE departments and other schools (e.g., School of Public Health, School of Medicine, Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences).
Large collaborative research efforts relevant to the CEE department include the Impactful Resilient Infrastructure Science and Engineering (IRISE) Consortium, the Pittsburgh Water Collaboratory, Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation, and the Center for Social and Urban Research. Outstanding computational resources are available through the Center for Research Computing (CRC) and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC). Our graduates consistently secure excellent positions in academia, industry, and government.
How to apply:
Interested applicants should submit: (1) Cover Letter, (2) Curriculum Vitae, (3) Research Statement, (4) Teaching Statement, (5) Statement of plans/vision to advance the CEE department, and (6) Names and contact information for at least three professional references.
The application material should be uploaded n.pitt.edu (Requisition number ).
Although the search will remain open until the position is filled, review of applications will begin immediately, and the application material should be submitted by February 28, 2026, for full consideration. Questions or recommendations may be sent in confidence to cee.chair search.
