Director of Learning and Development

Responsibilities

The Director of Learning & Development (L&D) is responsible for designing, implementing, and sustaining a comprehensive organizational learning strategy that strengthens workforce capabilities and advances The Children's Institute's mission. This role provides strategic leadership while also supporting hands-on development, delivery, and evaluation of training programs across clinical services, The Day School, community programs, and administrative functions. The Director ensures staff receive high-quality training aligned to regulatory requirements, best practices in pediatric care and education, and the organization's culture of excellence.

This leader will collaborate closely with Human Resources, Clinical Leadership, The Day School, Compliance, and key operational partners to build a continuous learning environment that supports employee growth, retention, and performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership & Planning
    • Develop and execute a comprehensive, organization-wide learning and development strategy aligned with CI's mission, values, and strategic goals.
    • Partner with senior leadership to identify current and emerging training needs across programs, including clinical, educational, operational, and leadership development priorities.
  • Training Program Development
    • Design, coordinate, and deliver training programs across topics such as:
      • Clinical competencies (in collaboration with Clinical Leadership)
      • Trauma-informed care
      • Safety, compliance, and regulatory training
      • Customer service and family experience
      • Leadership and supervisory development
      • Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
      • Communication and collaboration skills
  • Organizational Learning Infrastructure
    • Lead the optimization and management of the Learning Management System (LMS).
    • Establish standardized training processes, onboarding pathways, and staff competency tracking.
  • Leadership Development & Coaching
    • Develop leadership capability across the organization through structured programs, coaching, and targeted development plans.
    • Support leaders in performance management practices, including feedback, coaching, and team development.
  • Partnership & Collaboration
    • Collaborate with all departments:
      Clinical Services, The Day School for staff development, Human Resources, Compliance and Quality and IT
  • Evaluation & Reporting
    • Establish metrics and evaluation systems to measure learning impact, training effectiveness, and staff development outcomes.
    • Provide regular reports to senior leadership on training participation, compliance completion rates, competency progress, and learning outcomes.
Qualifications
  • Education & Experience
    • Bachelor's degree required;
      Master's degree preferred in Education, Organizational Development, Human Resources, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
    • 5+ years of experience in learning and development, staff training, organizational development, or professional education—preferably in healthcare, education, or nonprofit settings.
    • Experience developing and delivering training for interdisciplinary teams (clinical, educational, and administrative).
    • Experience with LMS platforms, e-learning tools, and competency-based learning systems.
  • Skills & Competencies
    • Strong instructional design and curriculum development skills.
    • Excellent communication, facilitation, and public speaking abilities.
    • Demonstrated ability to build relationships across diverse teams and disciplines.
    • Knowledge of pediatric care environments, special education, regulatory training requirements, and trauma-informed practices (preferred).
    • Strong project management, organization, and data-tracking skills.
    • Skilled in change management and fostering a culture of learning.
