Overview
The Chester County Library, Exton has an opening for a Librarian II in the Technical Services Department.
This full‑time position is responsible for cataloging materials in a variety of formats and assisting in the maintenance of the online catalog for the 18‑library Chester County Library System. The role may also oversee assigned cataloging projects.
Responsibilities- Catalog new library materials using Skyriver, Sierra and Z39.50 databases.
- Create original cataloging records when necessary.
- Add items to existing records in the online library database, including eMaterial records.
- Resolve cataloging problems and maintain the quality of the library database by correcting errors and inconsistencies.
- Verify and use standard forms of headings to maintain database quality.
- Assist in training system staff on adding items and using cataloging tools.
- Attend county workshops and continuing education classes as required.
- Perform other duties and special projects as needed.
- Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an accredited institution.
- PA Professional Librarian Certification, or ability to obtain certification within the first three months of employment.
- At least one year of cataloging experience.
- Knowledge of national cataloging standards, including the Dewey Decimal System, Anglo‑American Cataloging Rules and Library of Congress subject headings.
- General knowledge of library practices and principles.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and time‑management skills.
- Intermediate computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office and library ILS software.
- PA criminal background check, PA child‑abuse clearance and FBI fingerprint‑based criminal background check.
- One year of cataloging experience at a public library.
- PA Professional Librarian Certification.
- Broad general knowledge to catalog materials in a variety of subject areas.
- Knowledge of current library technology.
- Adaptability to changes in the work environment.
- Ability to coordinate and direct work assignments and establish priorities.
All library positions require the following clearances:
- Report of criminal history from the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP)
- Child Abuse History Clearance from the Department of Human Services (Child Abuse)
- Fingerprint based federal criminal history submitted through the Pennsylvania State Police or its authorized agent (FBI)
All employees of the Chester County Library are considered a mandated reporter of suspected child abuse under the Child Protective Services Law (Title 23 Pa. C.S.A. Chapter 63).
Computer Skills- Intermediate Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) skills.
- Intermediate knowledge of library ILS software.
- Frequently required to stand, sit, walk, kneel, stoop or squat.
- Occasionally required to reach or work with arms above shoulder height, bend or twist at the waist, climb stairs, push up to 75 pounds, and lift and carry from 25 to 30 pounds over a distance of approximately three feet.
- Close vision required to read a PC monitor and to read a variety of print formats, including charts, maps and small print.
- Noise level is usually quiet.
- Much time is spent on a computer.
- Work performed inside an office or public desk environment.
- Occasional need to drive to meetings or events related to business services or activities.
