THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation is currently looking to hire a Seasonal Transportation Construction Inspector. This role involves a range of technical responsibilities focused on inspecting materials and workmanship for highway and bridge construction projects within Engineering District 4-0.

The primary objective of this position is to ensure that all construction activities adhere to the established codes, plans, standards, and specifications. By meticulously evaluating the quality of work and materials used, the inspector plays a crucial role in maintaining safety and compliance throughout the construction process.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will be responsible for inspecting all aspects of transportation construction activities. This includes assisting in the verification of grades, elevations, and the layout of structures and roadways in collaboration with contractors and surveyors. You will also oversee the proper placement of various materials essential to transportation projects, such as cement concrete, bituminous concrete, and drainage materials. Additionally, you will conduct compaction testing using visual non-movement methods to assess the integrity of sub-surface strata, soils, and aggregates.

Your role will require effective communication and collaboration with Department staff, as well as interaction with federal, state, and local agencies, legislators, and the public to ensure the successful administration of the projects. You will also be expected to perform other related duties as necessary to support the overall objectives of the team.

Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Seasonal, Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • You will work closely with vendors and work hours may change based on vendor availability.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
  • Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
  • One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirement
  • This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
