Job Description

The Environmental Inspector conducts routine inspections of construction sites to evaluate the effectiveness of erosion and sediment control measures and ensure compliance with environmental regulations in Pennsylvania. This role prepares detailed inspection reports, provides guidance to contractors on best management practices, and supports a large gas utility project with long-term work opportunities. The position combines extensive fieldwork with office-based documentation and offers a balanced work environment with competitive benefits and a strong focus on work/life balance.

Responsibilities

+ Conduct routine inspections of construction sites to evaluate the effectiveness of erosion and sediment control measures such as silt fences, basins, and related systems.

+ Ensure construction activities comply with NPDES permits, local ordinances, and applicable Pennsylvania environmental regulations.

+ Monitor and document erosion and sediment control practices to verify adherence to Chapter 102 Regulations and other relevant standards.

+ Prepare detailed inspection reports that clearly describe site conditions, findings, and any compliance issues observed.

+ Take clear and comprehensive photographs of site conditions to support inspection reports and maintain visual records.

+ Maintain organized records of inspections, compliance violations, and corrective actions taken.

+ Provide guidance and recommendations to contractors on best management practices to prevent pollution, erosion, and sedimentation.

+ Collaborate with construction personnel to address deficiencies in erosion and sediment control measures and support timely corrective actions.

+ Report inspection findings and significant compliance issues to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection or county conservation districts as required.

+ Use mobile technology and field equipment to collect data, perform data entry, and upload inspection information.

+ Read and interpret blueprints and construction plans to understand project scope and verify that erosion and sediment control measures align with design requirements.

+ Maneuver safely around rugged construction terrain and active work zones while conducting field inspections in varied weather conditions.

+ Support ongoing environmental oversight for a large gas utility project and contribute to consistent regulatory compliance over the life of the project.

Essential Skills

+ At least 2+ years of environmental inspection experience, preferably in construction or utility projects.

+ Hands-on experience with erosion and sediment control practices and technologies.

+ Qualified Visual Site Inspector certification (required).

+ Strong understanding of Chapter 102 Regulations and erosion control techniques in Pennsylvania.

+ Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings.

+ Proficiency in operating field equipment used for inspections and environmental monitoring.

+ Ability to use mobile technology and digital tools for field data entry, reporting, and uploading documentation.

+ Capability to maneuver in rugged construction terrain and work safely in varied weather conditions.

+ Reliable transportation to travel to multiple construction sites as needed.

+ Experience in construction, environmental science, or related environmental fieldwork.

+ Familiarity with water sampling and erosion assessment in a field environment.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based, with approximately 65% to 75% of the time spent visiting active construction sites across Pennsylvania. The position involves working outdoors in varied weather conditions and navigating rugged construction terrain around heavy equipment and active work zones. When not in the field, the Environmental Inspector works in an office environment to upload data, complete reports, and organize documentation using mobile technology and computer-based systems.
