Traffic Control Specialist Trainee

Overview

Traffic Control Specialist Trainee – a 12‑month training program with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The role prepares the trainee to support roadway safety and traffic engineering tasks for Pennsylvania roads.

• Assist with routine traffic studies for signals, warning devices, and other electronic equipment.
• Support the review and preparation of less complex traffic signal designs and technical studies.
• Evaluate traffic routes, pavement markings, and signage to identify safety concerns.
• Use computer software to complete capacity reviews and timing analyses for signal optimization.
• Examine traffic control plans for construction projects and utility operations.
• Provide information to staff and customers through reports, communications, and participation in studies.

• Full‑time employment, Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:00 PM with a 30‑minute lunch.
• Telework opportunity up to three days per week, subject to change.
• Salary determined by PennDOT compensation guidelines.

• One year as a Traffic Control Technician (or equivalent); or
  • Four years of transportation engineering assignments (e.g., traffic data collection, signal inspection) and high‑school graduation; or
  • Two years in transportation engineering assignments and an associate’s degree in mathematics, statistics, or civil engineering technology; or
  • A bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, civil engineering technology, or a closely related field; or
  • Equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Applicants may be considered within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

• Must meet Pennsylvania residency requirement.
• Must be able to perform essential job functions.
