Aerotech Internship
Looking for meaningful work where you can make a difference in global innovation? Engineer a better future with Aerotech, a global leader in precision motion and automation. Our customers create some of the most innovative products on the planet, from life-saving medical devices to tools for deep space exploration. Our precision motion and automation systems make it all possible.
As an intern or co-op at Aerotech, you will gain exceptional hands-on experience, learn directly from leading motion control engineers, and work on real-world projects that matter. Our total rewards internship program offers:
- Direct access to experienced mentors across multiple disciplines including hardware design and firmware development.
- Opportunities to extend your classroom learning to practical hardware and firmware applications.
- Competitive compensation and flexible schedules supporting your educational goals.
- Participation in intern group activities, engineering luncheons, and company events.
A co-op/internship position in Aerotech's Electrical Engineering R&D department offers hands-on experience with design, analysis, implementation, and testing across our motion control products. Because the responsibilities of this team encompass both board-level design and embedded firmware, your day-to-day work may span analog and digital circuit design, PCB layout, FPGA logic using VHDL, or embedded firmware development in C/C++. You will work directly on physical motion control hardware in a collaborative environment alongside experienced engineering mentors.
WhatWill Your Day Look Like? At Aerotech, You May:
- Test, debug, and evaluate prototype circuit boards and electronic assemblies used in our servo drives and motion controllers.
- Work with Altium Designer to make changes to existing circuits or design new sub-circuits within a larger system.
- Implement, modify, and debug embedded C/C++ code running on real-time microcontrollers or DSPs.
- Simulate, test, or update VHDL code targeting FPGAs used for high-speed motion control functionality.
- Utilize bench equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters) to diagnose signal integrity or hardware-firmware integration issues.
- Conduct functional tests on physical motion control hardware to verify design performance and document test results.
- Education:
Currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) degree program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field from an ABET-accredited college or university. - Academic Standing:
Accepting Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors that plan to attend graduate school. Must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above. - Technical
Skills:
Strong programming skills (C or C++) and foundational coursework in circuit analysis or digital logic design. Hands-on experience using basic electronic test instruments (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) in a lab or project setting. - Location:
Must be available to work on-site at our headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA.
Note:
This is a paid position, but Aerotech does not provide additional housing or relocation assistance. - Legal Authorization:
Must be authorized to work in the United States currently and in the future without employer sponsorship. Aerotech does not provide US work authorization sponsorship for this position. OPT and CPT visa holders are not eligible.
- Practical exposure to analog or digital circuit design.
- Coursework or project experience using schematic capture and PCB layout software (e.g., Altium Designer).
- Experience writing C/C++ for embedded processors in bare-metal or real-time operating system environments.
- Exposure to Hardware Description Languages (e.g., VHDL or Verilog) and FPGA development environments (e.g., Vivado Design Suite).
- Familiarity with digital signal processing techniques or feedback control systems.
- Familiarity with Git version control and Atlassian Jira issue tracking software.
