Our client is a growing automation-driven manufacturing company with an immediate need for a Senior Automation & Controls Engineer for its facility located in Pittsburgh, PA.

The company is scaling automation across the plant, so this engineer owns high-visibility projects from design through startup. You will specify and program new automated cells, integrate robotics, and set the controls standard the site builds on.
Position Summary
The Senior Automation & Controls Engineer leads controls design, programming, and integration for automated production systems. This role drives new automation projects and mentors junior engineers and technicians. The position reports to the Engineering Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead controls design and PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or Mitsubishi) for new automated equipment and cells.
- Integrate robotics (for example FANUC, ABB, or KUKA), servo systems, VFDs, and machine vision.
- Develop HMI and SCADA applications and support data collection and OEE systems.
- Own automation projects from specification and panel design through commissioning and startup.
- Ensure machine safety compliance and support electrical design.
- Troubleshoot complex downtime issues and drive reliability improvements.
- Document systems and train maintenance and operations teams.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Controls Engineering; equivalent experience considered.
- 5+ years of automation and controls engineering in manufacturing.
- Advanced PLC programming and HMI/SCADA development.
- Hands-on robotics and automated-cell integration experience.
- Ability to lead projects and troubleshoot on the floor.
- Proficient in MS Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Superior written and oral communication skills.
