Duties

Help

The position performs docketing and legal report development using computerized case tracking and record-keeping systems in the United States Attorney's Office (USAO); and provides support to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) and legal support staff. The automated systems are tools which provide information used to manage litigation from initial referral to final disposition and to provide comprehensive data for resource planning and evaluation.

Typical work assignments will include:

- Inputs and updates information in databases and systems and updates records and all items docketed as needed.

- Recognizes data elements that are missing and locates with research in files or legal reference material.

- Develops and maintains records from referral to disposition and case closure, including preparing records for shipment or storage.

- Extracts requested program and/or statistical data on a regularly scheduled or ad hoc basis.

- Analyzes data, creates and reviews recurring reports, (e.g., reports of new claims or cases) and provides statistical data to respond to inquiries.

- Conducts case certification by working with attorneys to verify case information, performing necessary research to correct and update case records.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • Time-in-Grade:
    Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.
Qualifications

GS-6: To be eligible at the GS-6 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience reviewing legal documents such as complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels for completeness of factual information; inputting information into databases and systems and updating records; submission of a variety of documents using electronic systems;

and using automated software to produce legal related reports, documents, correspondence and related materials.

To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)

GS-07: To be eligible at the GS-07 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience using advanced automation techniques to extract legal data from automated databases; conducting periodic case certification reviews; utilizing knowledge of legal terminology, litigation processes and court proceedings to properly docket and identify errors in either input of documents or in the computer record.

To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
