Hours: Monday-Friday Five 8's or Four 10's - Call every 10th weekend
Location: UPMC Passavant
Position Specifics: We are seeking an exceptional Physician Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner to work directly alongside our spine-focused neurosurgeons in a resident-free environment that empowers APPs to lead in patient care across the full continuum—from initial consult to post-operative recovery. This is an ideal opportunity for a motivated, confident provider who thrives in a hands-on role and is eager to build meaningful relationships with patients and colleagues.
You’ll develop deep expertise in spinal pathology, gain robust surgical exposure, and have the satisfaction of seeing patients through every phase of their care.
Department Details: Join a dynamic, collaborative, and autonomous Neurosurgical Spine team at UPMC Passavant, where Advanced Practice Providers are integral members of a high-performing academic practice.
What You’ll Do:
- Inpatient:
Manage neurosurgical admissions, pre- and post-operative care, and discharge planning in collaboration with the attending surgeon. - Operating Room:
First assist in spine surgeries—expand your procedural skillset and work elbow-to-elbow with an expert surgical team. - Consult Services:
Evaluate and manage neurosurgical consults throughout the hospital—be the clinical lead in triaging and initiating care plans. - Outpatient Clinic:
Conduct pre-operative evaluations, post-operative follow-ups, and ongoing spine patient management in a fast-paced outpatient setting. - Call:
Participate in a light, shared weekday call rotation (1–2 nights/week) and 1 in every 10 weekends—ensuring strong continuity of care without burnout.
Why This Role Is Exceptional:
- No Residents = More Autonomy: APPs are valued decision-makers. You’ll lead consults, write orders, present directly to attendings, and shape care plans.
- Full Spectrum Spine Focus:
Develop subspecialty expertise in spine surgery with consistent operative exposure, clinic continuity, and inpatient management. - Academic Environment, Community Feel:
Though located in a high-performing community hospital, you’ll work as part of the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Neurological Surgery, accessing academic resources, CME support, and professional development. - Work-Life Balance:
Enjoy a 4-day workweek and a sustainable call schedule. Weekends are covered by a rotating pool—only 1 in 10 weekends—with generous backup and support. - Tight-Knit, High-Functioning Team:
Our APPs love this team because of the collaborative culture, surgical involvement, and ability to truly own their role. We value initiative, curiosity, and professionalism.
