Brief Overview

The professional development specialist is an educational planner responsible for assuring that educational outcomes are measurable and are in alignment with the educational design and planning of programming. They serve as a consultant, role model, change agent, mentor, collaborator, and facilitator of learning.

What You Will Do
  • Design educational activities to improve professional practice and patient care, addressing practice gaps for licensed and non-licensed healthcare personnel and achieving specific outcomes.
  • Assess and prioritize practice gaps at the department, hospital, and enterprise levels, aligning with hospital initiatives and environmental scanning.
  • Identify learning needs by evaluating knowledge, skill, and practice gaps, distinguishing between practice, performance, and system issues.
  • Identify realistic and achievable outcomes in collaboration with key stakeholders and subject matter experts.
  • Plan appropriate interventions incorporating theories of learning, behavioral change, and motivation, analyzing cost and return on investment for educational activities.
  • Implement educational programs using evidence-based guidelines such as adult learning theory and brain-based learning, applying CHOP’s improvement framework for continuous improvement.
  • Develop, coordinate, manage, facilitate, conduct, and evaluate orientation programs for nursing and other healthcare personnel as part of onboarding.
  • Assist unit leadership in competency selection and instructional strategy to support ongoing assessment and evaluation of performance.
  • Facilitate professional role development, supporting continuous learning, role transition, and skill mastery from novice to expert.
  • Promote research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement, including participation in research projects and dissemination of findings.
  • Collaborate with partners across multiple professional backgrounds to plan and achieve desired results.
Education Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing (required)
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing Education (preferred)
Experience Qualifications
  • At least two years experience in a clinical, leadership, or educational role in Nursing (required)
  • At least five years in an acute care hospital setting in a pediatric nursing professional development role (preferred)
Skills and Abilities
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint (preferred)
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative when necessary
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills (required)
  • Teaching and presentation skills (required)
Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Nurse (Pennsylvania) – Pennsylvania State Licensing Board – upon hire (required)
  • Nursing Temporary Practice Permit (Pennsylvania) – Pennsylvania State Licensing Board – upon hire (required)
  • Nursing Temporary Practice Permit (New Jersey) – New Jersey State Licensing Board – upon hire (required)
  • Registered Nurse (New Jersey) – New Jersey State Licensing Board – upon hire (required)
  • Nursing Professional Development Certification NPD‑BC – American Nurses Credentialing Center – within 36 months (required)
  • Basic Life Support – issued through an organization requiring a hands‑on instructor like the American Heart Association or Red Cross – upon hire (required)

Salary Range

$ – $ Annually (full‑time only). Part‑time compensation will be adjusted accordingly.
