UPMC Mercy is hiring a full-time Senior Licensed Practical Nurse to support its 6E Brain Injury Rehab department! Title/salary will be determined based off of years of experience. This position is eligible for a generous sign-on bonus!

UPMC Mercy Rehabilitation Institute is one of the leading rehabilitation programs in the United States as well as a dedicated Comprehensive Stroke Center as accredited by the Joint Commission. Our patients have access to state-of-the-art technology and comprehensive services to assist with recovery. Our neuro/trauma inpatient rehabilitation departments provide an opportunity to build connections with patients and families as we foster a healing environment.

6E is an 18-bed Traumatic Brain Injury Unit. We are ranked 7th in the nation by Newsweek. We specialize in providing a multidisciplinary approach to those recovering from traumatic brain injury and patients who have undergone a stroke and other neurological disorders. Our goal is assisting patients to achieve their highest level of function with a focus on discharging to home.

Staff work hand in hand with the top-rated physiatrist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech and language pathologist, and discharge plan managers to provide comprehensive care. We are also home to a phenomenally successful DOC (disorders of consciousness) program, that focuses on rehabilitation for this unique population. Some educational opportunities include endotracheal tube management, feeding tube management, and behavior management.

The LPN is licensed to function as a member of the health-care team by exercising sound nursing judgment based on preparation, knowledge, experience in nursing and competency. The LPN participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care using focused assessment in settings where nursing takes place. An LPN shall communicate with a licensed professional nurse and the patient's health care team members to seek guidance when:
The patient's care needs exceed the licensed practical nursing scope of practice. The patient's care needs surpass the LPN's knowledge, skill or ability. The patient's condition deteriorates or there is a significant change in condition, the patient is not responding to therapy, the patient becomes unstable or the patient needs immediate assistance.

An LPN shall obtain instruction and supervision if implementing new or unfamiliar nursing practices or procedures. An LPN shall follow the written, established policies and procedures of UPMC, UPMC LPN Practice Guidelines and the State Practice Act.

  • Formulates daily goals and a plan of care for patients that involves the patient as partner and considers the individual needs of the patient in a holistic manner.
  • Communicates the patient's condition to other care providers.
  • Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers.
