UPMC is seeking a Senior Professional Staff Nurse to join our Same Day Surgery Pre-Call Team in a casual role designed for nurses who want meaningful work with limited hospital hours.

This is an ideal opportunity for retired nurses, nurses seeking supplemental income, or those looking to reduce bedside responsibilities while remaining connected to patient care.

About the Role

As a member of our Same Day Surgery team, you will play a critical role in ensuring patients are prepared, informed, and confident before their procedure. Through surgery pre-calls, you will review important pre-operative instructions, answer questions, and provide arrival information to help create a smooth surgical experience.

While this role does not involve direct patient care, your nursing knowledge and communication skills will directly impact patient safety, satisfaction, and outcomes.

What You'll Do

+ Complete pre-operative phone calls with scheduled surgery patients

+ Review medical information and provide procedure preparation instructions

+ Communicate patient arrival times and surgery expectations

+ Address patient questions and concerns prior to surgery

+ Document conversations accurately and thoroughly

+ Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, and surgical team members to ensure patients are prepared for surgery

+ Serve as a clinical resource and role model while maintaining professional nursing standards

The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below. They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.

Minimum 2 years' experience. BSN preferred. Must obtain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on a Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation to be promoted to this level. Must maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on annual performance evaluation to maintain status.
