Petco invites applications for the Hospital Medical Leader position to lead our Vetco Total Care hospital teams.
Hospital Medical Leader PositionThe Hospital Medical Leader directs a team of veterinarians to provide high‑quality patient care while ensuring compliance with company policy and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities- Leadership/Management Duties:
- Lead and mentor the hospital veterinarian team.
- Partner with the Hospital Office Manager for cohesive leadership.
- Coach veterinarians to improve clinical skills and client communication.
- Maintain compliance with Petco Medical SOPs and state practice act.
- Interview and onboard new veterinarians.
- Create and manage veterinarian schedules.
- Analyze hospital performance and collaborate with leadership to drive revenue growth.
- Review electronic medical records and provide feedback for patient care improvement.
- Address client concerns promptly and resolve incidents.
- Oversee controlled‑substance inventory and DEA compliance.
- Promote a culture of safety for patients, clients, and staff.
- Coordinate radiation safety training.
- Clinical Care Duties:
- Perform physical exams, diagnose diseases, and provide preventive care.
- Use a problem‑based approach for diagnostics and treatment.
- Document patient records comprehensively.
- Conduct routine and complex surgical procedures.
- Perform routine and complex dental procedures.
- Develop treatment plans for at‑risk patients and coordinate referrals.
- Other Duties:
- Participate in rounds at shift change.
- Train staff to enhance care and communication.
- Perform duties as assigned and maintain required permits or vendor accounts.
The Hospital Medical Leader reports to the Area Medical Director for clinical decisions and directs all hospital veterinarians.
Planning and Problem SolvingStrong problem‑solving skills are essential for expeditious diagnosis and effective patient care.
ImpactThis role advances hospital growth, promotes quality care, retains staff, and enhances customer satisfaction.
Supervisory ResponsibilityManages all full‑time, part‑time, and relief veterinarians.
Education / Experience- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent AVMA‑accredited degree.
- 1–3 years of clinical veterinary experience.
- Experience mentoring veterinarians (preferred).
- Active state veterinary license without contingencies.
- DEA license.
- Controlled‑substance license if applicable.
- USDA Category I accreditation or on‑site completion within 2 months.
- Proficiency in anesthesia and routine surgeries.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Compassionate, professional demeanor in stressful situations.
- Phone and computer skills.
- Team player willing to adopt new techniques.
Primary duties occur in the full‑service hospital; require bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 lb, and long standing periods. Frequent client and pet interaction.
