Research Specialist A/B (Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics)
Job Description SummaryTvardovskiy Lab is seeking a highly motivated and well‑organized individual with a strong interest in mass spectrometry and/or epigenetic research, and a long‑term goal of pursuing a career in science. The research specialist will work closely with the Principal Investigator and other lab members on projects at the intersection of chromatin biology and proteomics. They will learn, apply, and contribute to the development of cutting‑edge mass spectrometry‑based methods for the quantitative analysis of nuclear proteins and histone post‑translational modifications, along with a variety of biochemical, cellular, and molecular biology approaches.
The research specialist will participate in lab meetings and other relevant scientific events and is expected to develop a high level of independence, with the ability to take the lead on projects. They will assist with basic lab management, including daily maintenance of laboratory equipment, tools, documentation, ordering supplies for ongoing research, and performing additional duties as assigned. This position requires strong organizational skills, dedication, and the ability to efficiently multi‑task.
Position contingent on continued grant funding.
Job Responsibilities- Bacterial and eukaryotic cell culture
- Protein expression, extraction and purification;
Western blot analysis - Subcellular fractionation, including nuclei isolation from human and animal tissue samples
- Sample preparation for mass spectrometry and next‑generation sequencing
- Analysis of proteomics and genomics data, including statistical evaluation and data visualization, using R or Python
- Attend and present results at lab meetings, departmental and institute seminars, and workshops; participate in research discussions and contribute to writing, editing, and literature reviews for ongoing projects
- Order reagents and supplies, maintain lab equipment, and manage documentation for projects as needed
- Perform additional duties as assigned
The Research Specialist A will contribute to research operations and basic laboratory maintenance duties. They will learn and apply a variety of experimental approaches and will be responsible for generating, analyzing, and interpreting experimental data. The Research Specialist A will work closely with the Principal Investigator and other team members, contributing to ongoing lab projects while also taking an active role in developing and leading their own research initiatives.
They will participate in scientific discussions, lab meetings, and other relevant events. Additionally, the Research Specialist will assist with managing day‑to‑day laboratory maintenance tasks to ensure the efficient operation of the lab.
The Research Specialist B will undertake all duties and responsibilities of the Research Specialist A, with the additional expectation of possessing technical skills relevant to the position and being able to independently perform certain methods, techniques, and/or data analysis. Hands‑on experience in the following areas will be considered a plus but is not mandatory: bioinformatics, mammalian tissue culture, genome editing, protein biochemistry, or next‑generation sequencing approaches.
Qualifications- Graduate or undergraduate degree in biology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, or a related field. A Bachelor of Science and 0 to 1 year of experience for Research Specialist A, 1 to 2 years of experience for Research Specialist B, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
