In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.

Carnegie Mellon University's department of Mechanical Engineering is searching for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department through research and development for required microwave sintering product development. You will work on investigating the effects of electric fields during synthesis and commercialization strategies.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Complete research and development required for microwave sintering product development.
  • Investigate the effects of electric fields during synthesis using characterization tools.
  • Work with CMU Swartz center on commercialization strategy
  • Lab maintenance and safety leadership
  • Present findings at conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals
  • Perform other project-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in materials science or related engineering degree
  • 3-5 years of experience:
    • Hands-on expertise in the field assisted synthesis of a variety of materials as well as characterization tools (x-ray, neutron scattering, optical and electron microscopy, spectroscopy and analytical tools etc.)
    • Experience with fabricating and testing devices for sensing and/or energy storage (e.g., batteries) is required.
    • Knowledge of/experience with analysis required for commercialization and productization of microwave sintering technology is highly desired.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of ceramics, microwaves, energy
  • Experience working in a wet lab and experimental data gathering and analysis
