It shall be the duty of all Maintenance Officers to perform a variety of maintenance, repairs, inspections, demolition, and metal/wooden fabrication to ensure successful operations at the York County Prison. Staff will attempt to make all necessary repairs to equipment and building structures within the facility. If repairs cannot be made, staff will communicate with the Maintenance Lieutenant/Facilities Manager to have authorized contractors assist with repairs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Inspect the interior and exterior of physical institution.
  • Inspect all equipment in mechanical rooms, tunnels, housing units and roofing.
  • Inspect all necessary fluid levels as well as belts in possible need of adjustment or replacement.
  • Perform troubleshooting and major/minor repairs of electrical wiring, plumbing, and mechanical utilizing blueprints and/or maintenance and repair manuals.
  • Instruct inmate workers in achieving assigned responsibilities.
  • Repair/rebuild water valves for push button plumbing.
  • Clean debris and waste matter from clogged drains and toilets using an electric snake.
  • Operate computer-based programs.
  • Utilize and become proficient with assigned power tools and equipment.
  • Complete construction-type work, such as, concrete work, metal/wood fabrication, demolition and painting.
  • Maintain parts and tool inventory and submit request orders for replacement when needed.
  • Complete daily maintenance logs for job activities.
  • In the event of an emergency, maintenance staff shall be called in off duty.
  • Enforce rules and regulations of the facility.
  • Inspect facility for cleanliness and contraband.
  • Prepare reports of incidents and other required reports.
  • Work effectively with other correctional staff, including all departments and contracted service providers or vendors.
  • Regulate ingress and egress from cells, cell blocks, and housing units.
  • Attend required training.
  • Respond as directed by other proper authorities in event of an emergency.
  • Perform other duties as required to ensure successful operation of the institution.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Pennsylvania Driver’s License
  • Pass physical examination.
  • Pass criminal background check.
  • Ability to react quickly in emergency situations.
  • Must be proficient with basic computer skills.
  • Withstand temperatures of cold and hot conditions.
  • Ability to physically perform assigned duties without supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments and carry out work safely and independently or with others.
  • Ability to make decisions.
  • Ability to work with other staff, including all departments and contracted service providers or vendors.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to climb all ladders to a height of 10 feet.
  • Must be able to lift approximately 75lbs.
  • Must be able to operate all prison vehicles.
  • Should possess the basic knowledge of electric, plumbing, HVAC, and construction.
