Job Summary
The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position will perform on site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks and will be responsible for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication, and various types of on‑track safety in controlled and non‑controlled track areas.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide the required job site protection on each assignment, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements and granting permission for trains and on‑track equipment to proceed through limits.
- Perform daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure all personnel adhere to the safety requirements of the railroad.
- Prepare and submit required electronic forms including job set‑up forms for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other reports as required.
- Handle and place signs, derails, and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds as necessary throughout the day.
- Actively participate in routine re‑occurring safety classes and qualification training.
- Maintain high‑level communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and respectful workplace culture free from behaviors that undermine morale, productivity, or organizational values.

- Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required to meet the business needs.
- Require routine and extensive travel across Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. Periodic travel along the Southern Region may also be required.
- Candidates must be willing and able to travel frequently, including overnight stays, in line with project schedules and business needs.
- Candidates are eligible to receive daily per diems for meals and hotels, plus mileage reimbursement for all billable days worked.
- Able to complete required physical demands and/or tasks.
- Able to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains.
- Understand the on‑track safety training and qualification required of roadway workers to be protected.
- Proficient in the radio procedure for communicating between RWIC/EICs and the assigned work group.
- Proficient in performing a job briefing with all roadway workers within their work location.
- Able to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
- Able to install a railroad derail and apply locking device.
- Proficiency with electronic communications including email, text, and standard office applications such as Microsoft Office Suite.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- 20 years of experience with the last position held as a supervisor track inspection (STI), assistant track supervisor (ATS), foreman, or higher, OR 20 years of experience as an RWIC while employed by a Class I or Class II freight railroad.
- Employment contingent upon successful outcome of pre‑employment and recurring background checks, drug and alcohol testing, and completion of classroom and field training, including assessments. Successful completion of all onboarding and recurring training requirements is mandatory for continued employment.
