Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic

Position Overview

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Butler County Maintenance Organization, is seeking a motivated Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic to keep essential equipment in reliable working condition and support safe travel throughout the county.

• Repair engines, transmissions, brakes, and other major components on vehicles and machinery.
• Complete preventative maintenance inspections and service routines.
• Use diagnostic tools to identify mechanical and electrical problems.
• Carry out official state inspections to ensure safety compliance.
• Provide field support by making minor adjustments and repairs during field operations.
• Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance activities and equipment conditions.

• Full‑time employment.
• Work hours 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday–Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch break.
• Travel, overtime, and shift work required; hours may change based on seasonal and operational needs.
• Telework not an option.
• Starting annual salary $56,607.00 for new employees with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

• Successful completion of the Commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee Program, or
• Two years of journey‑level mechanic experience diagnosing and repairing automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, including one year of diesel vehicle experience, or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

• Active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
• Active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with FMCSA regulations on the first day of employment.
• Active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
• Pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
• Active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N).

• Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with federal regulations.
• Must be able to perform essential job functions.
