THE POSITION

The UCC Building Inspector Trainee position with the Department of Labor & Industry provides a chance to learn a valued profession while supporting public safety. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on learning how to inspect buildings and structures to ensure they meet safety and construction standards. The role combines field training, technical reviews, and public safety responsibilities. As a UCC Building Inspector Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

  • Inspection Training:
    Train to examine buildings and structures for compliance with safety and construction requirements
  • Plan Review:
    Review municipal code programs to assess accessibility compliance under the UCC
  • Safety Reporting:
    Report unsafe conditions and ensure follow-up inspections of corrected issues
  • Compliance Actions:
    Assist with enforcing corrective orders including recommending stop work notices
  • Legal Support:
    Support agency representation at hearings and help obtain search warrants when required
  • Record Management:
    Maintain daily activity records and prepare detailed inspection reports

Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Home Headquartered:
    This position is home headquartered. In order to be home headquartered, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.
  • Salary:

Required Experience, Training & Eligibility QUALIFICATIONS MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • One year of experience inspecting commercial, industrial, or other public use buildings for compliance with building and safety codes; or
  • Two years of building construction work which included the performance of skilled trades duties in the electrical, structural, plumbing, or mechanical trades; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Conditions of Employment
  • This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license.
Post Employment Requirements
  • This position requires valid certification issued by the Department of Labor and Industry, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as an Accessibility Inspector/Plan Examiner within the probationary period.
  • All positions in this job also require one of the following valid certifications issued by the Department of Labor and Industry, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, within the probationary period:
    Building Inspector, Electrical Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, or Energy Inspector.
Other Requirements
  • The selected candidate must live in or be willing to relocate to Berks county by date of hire. Expenses will not be paid.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
