Job SummaryThe Chief Treatment Plant Operator assists the Superintendent with the overall operation, supervision, and management of the wastewater treatment facility. The position ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, oversees staff, manages maintenance and operation of the plant, and ensures efficient and safe treatment of wastewater.
Responsibilities- Oversee daily operations of the wastewater treatment plant, including management of treatment processes, chemical usage, and sludge disposal.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, permits, and safety standards; prepare and submit required reports to regulatory agencies.
- Distribute work assignments to division staff.
- Operate and adjust treatment-related machinery.
- Make routine laboratory tests at various stages of treatment; direct changes in treatment chemicals and equipment to maintain performance within limits.
- Maintain accurate records of plant operations, including daily logs, maintenance records, and regulatory reports; provide regular updates to the Superintendent.
- Perform all other duties as assigned or required.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Valid Grade 7 Mass Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s Certificate.
- 3–5 years of relevant experience with complex wastewater treatment operations; supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes: primary & secondary clarification, trickling filter operation, nitrification, anaerobic digestion, chlorination, phosphorus removal, sludge de‑watering, NPDES permits.
- Familiarity with SCADA systems and plant management software.
- Strong mathematical skills and familiarity with routine calculations used in wastewater treatment and process control.
- Excellent communication skills for working with a diverse population.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
The incumbent works in various municipal buildings on the DPU Wastewater/Water campus. Duties involve frequent interaction with the public, government officials, staff, boards, and third parties. Exposure to noise, odors, hazardous chemicals, and extreme weather possible. Incumbent may be required to work at any time during the 24‑hour day to respond to weather‑related or emergency needs.
Physical RequirementsAbility and agility sufficient to operate valves, gates, and other equipment; entry into manholes and vaults, climbing ladders, cross‑county travel as required. Lift up to 50 lbs.
Hours6:30 am–3:00 pm, Monday–Friday; 40 hours per week.
SalaryStarting rate $27.84–$29.53 per hour with annual increases up to $40.88 per hour.
