Job SummaryThe City of Pittsfield’s Department of Public Utilities, Water & Sewer Division seeks a qualified individual to serve as a Water Machinery Repair Person. The role involves installing, maintaining, and repairing equipment used in the distribution, collection, and treatment of potable and non‑potable water and sewage.

Responsibilities- Install, maintain, and repair machinery and equipment such as pumps, motors, generators, valves, chlorinators, engines, gates, process piping, etc., related to the distribution, collection, handling, or treatment of potable or non‑potable water and sewage.
- Perform periodic preventive maintenance and emergency troubleshooting and repairs, maintaining potable pumps and conveyors, booster pumps, filter bed equipment, and related machinery.
- Carry out minor or incidental repairs on motorized equipment and vehicles supporting water treatment and/or distribution or sewage collection and treatment systems.
- May perform pipe fitting, welding, or other skilled duties required to accomplish repairs.
- Perform landscape and incidental building and structural maintenance as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
- At least two years of experience maintaining mechanical equipment and systems involving pumps, motors, engines, valves, plumbing, collector mechanisms, etc.
- Physical ability and agility sufficient to operate valves and equipment, climb tanks, enter vaults and underground tanks through small access manways, work outdoors in all weather conditions, lift up to 50 lbs from ground to shoulder height, and open manhole covers.
- Knowledge of small hand and power tools.
- Familiarity with basics of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic control systems.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Valid Grade 1 Massachusetts Drinking Water Operator’s License to be obtained within two years of appointment.
- Ability to interact positively with people in all circumstances.
The incumbent works in various municipal buildings and locations, interacting frequently with the public, government officials, staff, and third parties. Frequent periods of outside work may be required under all weather conditions. The incumbent may need to work at any time during the 24‑hour day to respond to weather-related or emergency needs.
Physical RequirementsAbility and agility sufficient to operate valves and similar equipment; climb high ladders on water tanks; enter vaults and confined spaces; walk long distances over uneven terrain; lift up to 50 lbs from ground to shoulder height; operate pavement breaking and pipeline repair equipment; perform heavy labor.
Hours7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Monday – Friday (40 hours per week)
SalaryStarting salary $19.10 – $20.27 per hour. Annual increases up to $26.44.
With Distribution 1 or Treatment 1 License:
Starting salary $21.02 – $22.30 per hour. Annual increases up to $29.10.
