The City of Pittsfield is currently searching to fill the position of Electrician within the Building Maintenance Department. The Electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance and alteration of a wide variety of electrical systems. The position requires a thorough working knowledge of the standards, practices & techniques of the electrical trade.

Responsibilities- Install, maintain, and upgrade electrical wiring, components, and circuitry for power and lighting systems across municipal facilities.
- Run BX cable, cut and thread conduit, and install piping systems according to required specifications and safety standards.
- Install, inspect, and maintain fuse boxes, electrical switchboards, and distribution panels to ensure reliable and compliant operation.
- Diagnose, repair, and replace electrical switches, fixtures, lighting systems, and related components to maintain functionality and safety.
- Service, lubricate, and repair electric motors and associated equipment, including resetting brushes and caring for communicators, to support uninterrupted mechanical operations.
- Test, troubleshoot, and repair communication systems, fire alarm systems, and specialized electrical equipment such as motors, blowers, generators, HVAC components, and utility‑department systems.
- Collaborate with other trades and staff to support coordinated building maintenance projects and ensure safe and effective work sites.
- Perform additional duties as assigned or required to meet departmental and City operational needs.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three (3) – five (5) years' experience as a journeyman electrician.
- Current and valid Massachusetts Journeyman Electrical License.
- Valid driver's license, Class
D. - Comprehensive knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and techniques of the electrical trade, including familiarity with all applicable Federal, State, and municipal electrical and building codes.
- Solid understanding of fundamental electrical theory and the ability to apply it in troubleshooting and problem-solving situations.
- Demonstrated skill in diagnosing and repairing complex electrical wiring, fixtures, motors, panels, equipment, and related components.
- Ability to read, interpret, and work from electrical schematics, blueprints, diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team, including coordination with other trades, laborers, and City staff.
- Commitment to safe work practices, including adherence to OSHA standards and departmental safety protocols.
The incumbent works in various dynamic municipal buildings and locations. While performing the duties of the Electrician the incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the City. Frequent periods of outside work may be entailed, subject to all weather conditions and extremes. Incumbent may be required to work at any time during the 24-hour day to respond to weather-related or emergency needs.
Physical RequirementsThis position requires the ability to perform physically demanding tasks associated with electrical maintenance and repair work. Duties regularly involve:
- Repeated standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching.
- Climbing ladders, working at various heights, and navigating confined or restricted spaces.
- Safely lifting, carrying, and moving materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds from ground level to shoulder height.
