Job Overview
The Bus Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating the assigned vehicle on a specific route in accordance with the time schedule allotted for that route, while providing front‑line customer service to passengers.
Key Responsibilities- Operate assigned vehicle safely and efficiently on a specified route, adhering to the schedule.
- Ensure compliance with all traffic rules and regulations.
- Act as a front‑line customer service representative of the company.
- Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections of the vehicle and report any defects or issues using appropriate documentation and forms.
- Use good judgment, interpersonal communication skills and workplace knowledge to assist customers, assure passenger safety and resolve problems and conflicts wherever possible.
- Attend regular training sessions scheduled by the department supervisor and comply with the 5310 MAP driver qualification standards.
- Maintain reliable transportation to and from work and be physically capable of operating a passenger‑carrying public transit bus of varying sizes.
- Meet the minimum Federal Motor Carrier Regulations for age and physical condition.
- Pass a pre‑employment drug and alcohol test.
- Keep a valid CDL license with the required endorsements and no air‑brake restriction.
- Communicate verbally with passengers and produce accurate, legible, and factual written reports.
- Possess working knowledge of basic arithmetic, map reading, and time telling.
- Lift up to 30 pounds and reliably report to work on time.
- Commercial Driver's License (Class A or
B) with a Passenger P Endorsement and no air‑brake restriction. - For applicants with a Class A CDL lacking a Passenger Endorsement, possession of a Massachusetts CDL Passenger P Endorsement Permit.
- High school graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to obtain a valid bus operator's license issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU), supported and sponsored by the company if offered.
- Eligible to be insured under Berkshire Transit Management Inc.'s insurance policy for the duration of employment.
- Pass a USDOT medical examination/physical.
- Valid CDL license subject to ongoing compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Starting wage US $24.92 per hour, progressing to a top rate of US $26.67 per hour after six months.
- 100% employer‑paid health, dental, vision, and hearing insurance for employees and dependents (approximately US $26,000 per year or US $12.50 per hour).
- 401(k) contribution of US $1.15 per hour (US $2,392 annually).
- US $1,000 sign‑on bonus after probation and annual safety/attendance bonuses.
- Paid training: BRTA provides paid CDL License training for qualified applicants.
- Eleven paid holidays, paid time off, and a strong union contract guaranteeing benefits through 2027.
