Surface Grinder

Don’s Machine Shop in West Pittston, PA, is seeking a highly experienced Surface Grinder to join our shop team. This position requires a skilled machinist who can independently set up and operate precision surface grinding equipment, hold tight tolerances, and consistently produce quality work. Extensive hands‑on surface grinding experience in a machine shop environment is required.

• Independently set up and operate surface grinders to finish precision metal parts.
• Read and interpret blueprints, job specifications, and required tolerances.
• Select, mount, balance, and dress grinding wheels appropriate for the material and application.
• Set up and secure work pieces using magnetic chucks, fixtures, and other work holding methods.
• Determine appropriate feeds, speeds, and grinding techniques to achieve specified dimensions, flatness, parallelism, and surface finish.
• Inspect work using micrometers, indicators, height gauges, and other precision measuring equipment.
• Recognize and correct grinding issues such as chatter, burning, taper, and distortion.
• Maintain equipment, monitor wheel condition, and report maintenance needs.
• Follow shop safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.

• Extensive, proven experience setting up and operating precision surface grinders in a machine shop environment.
• Demonstrated ability to hold tight tolerances and produce consistent surface finishes.
• Strong blueprint‑reading and precision measurement skills.
• Thorough understanding of grinding wheels, abrasives, wheel dressing, work holding, and material behavior.
• Ability to complete jobs independently from setup through final inspection.
• Strong troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and commitment to quality.
• Dependable attendance, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work well with others.
