Special Education Paraprofessionals play a vital role in supporting the academic, behavioral, and health/hygiene needs of our students as directed by Special Education Teachers. The Specialized Program Paraprofessional is responsible for providing services and supports to the instructional program, including supervision, care, and instruction of students with unique or specialized needs in the regular classroom or specialized program; implementing plans, interventions, and strategies for instruction on academic, social/emotional, and life skills;
implementing behavioral plans designed by the IEP team; gathering data; assisting students who may require toileting, feeding, and lifting; and monitoring students in a variety of school environments to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Assisting in supervision, care, and instruction of students with unique or specialized needs in regular and specialized classrooms.
- Assisting in implementing plans, interventions, and strategies for instruction on academic, social/emotional, and life skills.
- Implementing behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions.
- Gathering data related to student needs and abilities.
- Assisting with students who may require toileting, feeding, and lifting.
- Monitoring students during assigned periods in various school environments (e.g., rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, parking lots).
- Utilizing behavioral approaches such as ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) or CPI (Crisis Prevention) to ensure access to the least restrictive environment (LRE).
- One of the following State of Illinois Licenses registered in Will County:
Paraprofessional Approval (PARA(STA)), Paraprofessional(ELS(PARA)), Substitute (SUB), or Professional Educator License (PEL). - College transcripts with 60+ credit hours or a passed Work Keys Assessment submitted to obtain licensure/certification.
- Ability to work as a team member.
- Work across school settings (lunch, recess, restroom).
- Willingness to work with students with disabilities or special needs.
- Ability to monitor student behavior.
- Ability to implement de-escalation techniques.
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with students, parents, and staff.
