Commissioning & Service Engineer (Siemens PLC) – Industrial Machinery

Location:

Plainfield, IL
Travel:
Project-based (approx. 40–50%)

This is a hands-on commissioning role supporting complex industrial machinery in real production environments. The position focuses on system startup, troubleshooting, PLC parameter optimization, and customer-facing technical support.

This Role Is NOT a PLC Programming-from-Scratch Position.

This role is designed for engineers who enjoy commissioning complex industrial machinery, troubleshooting at a system level, and stabilizing equipment under real production conditions.

You will not design PLC architecture from scratch.

You will work with machines already engineered and programmed by centralized engineering teams, focusing on commissioning, diagnostics, optimization, and customer-facing system support.

If you enjoy understanding machines end-to-end rather than sitting behind a desk writing code, this role is built for you.

About the Company

We are supporting a global German industrial technology manufacturer specializing in high-precision capital equipment used in aerospace, defense, automotive, and energy applications.

The U.S. subsidiary in Plainfield, IL operates as a commissioning, service, and training hub for North America and works within a structured European engineering matrix organization.

The company is known for long employee tenure, structured onboarding, strong engineering standards, and long-term technical development.

Full company details will be shared during the initial screening conversation.

About the Role

As the North American installed base continues to grow, the U.S. team is strengthening its hands-on commissioning and troubleshooting capabilities.

This position focuses on:

  • Commissioning custom-built capital equipment
  • System-level troubleshooting during startup and service cases
  • PLC parameter adjustments (Siemens TIA Portal preferred)
  • HMI validation and minor modifications
  • Customer training and technical support
  • Supporting lifecycle improvements of installed systems

This is not a reactive 24/7 emergency service role. Commissioning projects are structured and planned.

New hires are supported through mentoring and joint deployments — you will not be sent alone to customer sites during onboarding.

This role is ideal for engineers or advanced technicians with 3–6 years of commissioning, field service, or industrial automation experience who want to deepen their system-level expertise in precision machinery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support factory and site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT)
  • Perform IO checkout and functional validation
  • Adjust PLC parameters and machine settings
  • Diagnose electrical, automation, and system-level issues
  • Interface between customer teams and international engineering teams
  • Contribute to documentation and technical feedback loops
  • Support customer training during system handover
What We’re Looking For
  • 2–6 years of experience in commissioning, automation, or field service
  • Hands‑on PLC exposure (Siemens strongly preferred)
  • Experience with industrial machinery (not purely building automation)
  • Strong troubleshooting mindset and structured diagnostic approach
  • Willingness to travel project-based (approx. 40–50%)
  • Comfortable working in structured engineering environments
Long-Term Development

This position offers structured technical growth into:

  • Advanced system diagnostics
  • Precision manufacturing environments
  • Customer training leadership
  • Lifecycle engineering support

During lower travel phases, there is flexibility to support internal technical projects, training center activities, and manufacturing support functions.

This is a long‑term development opportunity within a globally recognized engineering organization.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Hourly Rate: $35 – $40/hour
  • Overtime paid at 1.5x after 40 hours
  • Additional uncapped performance-based incentives
  • 20 days PTO
  • 401(k) with 4% company match
  • Medical & dental insurance
  • Car allowance

If you are looking to grow within a technically complex, precision-driven industrial environment and build depth beyond standard automation roles, we look forward to connecting.
