Job Description

The Surgical Technologist/Surgical Assistant provides assistance to surgeons during operations and surgical procedures. The surgical assistant will provide pre and post-operative patient care, perform a variety of crucial tasks during operations, and may perform some clerical work. The Surgical Technician is responsible for the provision of patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary for the care of patients and the maintenance of the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Physician.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the implementation of technical components of patient care under the supervision of a licensed nurse according to policy, procedure, and protocol
  • Demonstrates competency in all procedures within the scope of practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patient served, including the ability to obtain, interpret, and communicate information in terms of the patient’s needs, a knowledge of growth and development, and an understanding of the range of treatment needed for a variety of age groups
  • Responsible for participating in the nursing process in all aspects of the delivery of patient care and completion of all activities according to established policy, procedure, and protocol
  • Communicates accurate and timely information to the Registered Nurse regarding patient in their care
  • Records pertinent information clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with patients, significant others, and co-workers
  • Utilizes appropriate lines of communications
  • Utilizes appropriate intraoperative techniques to support safe and efficient patient care
  • Sets up necessary items and equipment for procedures
  • Demonstrates knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures
  • Gathers required supplies, imaging, and instruments/equipment for each case
  • Handles instruments appropriately and with care
  • Maintains strict adherence to sterile technique
  • Demonstrates the ability to circulate under the direction of a Registered Nurse
  • Appraises cleanliness of rooms and ensures proper functioning of equipment
  • Sets up equipment necessary for patient care
  • Assists anesthesia during intraoperative procedures
  • Carefully prepares the surgical site
  • Assists with proper patient positioning
  • Prepares and labels specimens accurately
  • Accompanies the patient and anesthesia team to the PACU
  • Demonstrates knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures
  • Performs additional duties as needed
  • Under direction of RN, organizes a plan of care that incorporates physician prescribed treatments, nursing assessments and diagnostic data in a matter that is prioritized, timely and is integrated with the surgical plan of care
  • Under the direction of the RN, implements, documents, and evaluates the plan of care in a manner that reflects management of identified problems, reflects observations of patient’s response to treatment and Integrates physician’s orders into the plan
  • Demonstrates appropriate prioritization
  • Reflects collaboration with physicians and other members of the team
  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate administration of medications and treatments according to policy, procedure, and protocol
  • Reevaluates and modifies the plan of care as indicated
  • Accepts responsibility for nursing activities related to the care of the patient within the operating room
  • Demonstrates appropriate judgment and decision-making skills
  • Serves as a preceptor and orients new members of the surgical team
  • Acts as the patient’s advocate in meeting his/her physical and psychological needs
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills and the ability to recognize and intervene in stressful situations involving the patient, significant other and/or team members
  • Creates and maintains a safe and comfortable environment in which surgery can take place
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Requirements Education
  • Graduate of an Accredited Surgical Technology Program or equivalent on-the-job- training and at least 2 years’ experience
Certifications/Licensure
  • BLS certification within 6 months of hire
